Allozyme Variation in the Cotton Mouse (Peromyscus gossypinus)

Abstract: We examined allozyme variation at 40 presumptive gene loci in 1,904 cotton mice (Peromyscus gossypinus) from 62 locations throughout the range of the species. This species was highly variable: 92.7 percent of loci were polymorphic, observed heterozygosity per population ranged from 0.023 to 0.123 and averaged 0.088, and number of alleles per polymorphic locus averaged 5.6. The least variable populations were from the western part of the range, and the most variable were from the southeastern part. Virtually ev… Show more

“…However, in each of the remaining datasets, weighted mean F ST values were substantially reduced by the removal of outlying loci (i.e., those that remained statistically significant after correcting for multiple comparisons; Table 2). For example, in P. gossypinus (Boone 1995;Boone et al 1999), the weighted mean F ST was reduced from 0.178 to 0.089 after removing albumin (Alb) and general plasma protein-1 (Pg-1). Similarly, in P. maniculatus (Marquardt 1976), the weighted mean F ST was reduced from 0.050 to 0.019 after removing Alb.…”

“…Such information could potentially provide additional insight into the mode of selection responsible for shaping the observed patterns of variation. However, none of the original publications reported significant within-sample departures from Hardy-Weinberg genotypic proportions at any of the candidate genes listed in Table 2 (Selander et al 1971;Marquardt 1976;Smith 1979;Boone 1995Boone , 1999.…”

“…(B) Results from a survey of 24 loci in P. furvus (Harris and Rogers 1999; expected F ST ϭ 0.391). (C) Results from a survey of 37 loci in P. gossypinus (Boone 1995;Boone et al 1999; expected F ST ϭ 0.0.089). Alb and Pg-1 exhibited statistically significant departures from the neutral expectation at an adjusted ␣-level of 0.00135.…”

“…The dataset of P. gossypinus contains 70 specimens sampled from four states across the species’ range ( Table 1 ). The geographic sampling was intended to capture first-order variation between mainland phylogeographic groups within the species ( Boone et al. 1999 ; Beckmann 2011 ).…”
