Allometric relationships for estimating the aboveground phytomass and leaf area of mangrove Kandelia candel (L.) Druce trees in the Manko Wetland, Okinawa Island, Japan

Abstract: Allometric relationships for estimating the phytomass of aboveground organs (stem, branches, leaves and their sum) and the leaf area in the mangrove Kandelia candel (L.) Druce were investigated. The variable D 0.1 2 H (D 0.1 stem diameter at a height of H/10, H tree height) showed better accuracy of estimation than D 2 (D, DBH) or D 2 H. A moderate relationship was found when the branch weight, leaf weight and leaf area were plotted against D B 2 (D B stem diameter at a height of clear bole length). A strong l… Show more

“…Our results indicate that the easily-measurable tree parameters such as DBH do not show a high correlation with leaf area. This point was also confirmed by some previous reports (Gower et al 1999;Khan et al 2005;Babaei-Kafaki et al 2009). For instance, though Vyas et al (2010) introduced a low r 2 in the relation between DBH and LA, estimated an excellent correlation between LA and the crown spread area.…”

“…R. stylosa has more pioneer-like traits than B. gymnorrhiza (Smith 1992). K. obovata is also a pioneer species in mangrove succession (Khan et al 2005(Khan et al , 2007. These pioneer species could increase in abundance in such environments.…”

“…(4), ρ 0 specifies the initial density and b is a constant. The individual tree weight was approximated using the allometric relationships which were established for the same stand as reported in a previous study (Khan et al, 2005). All data analyses were performed using R software version 2.15.2 (R Development Core Team, 2011); the point pattern analysis (pair correlation and mark correlation), in particular, was performed using the "spatstat" package of R (Baddeley and Turner, 2005).…”
