Allogeneic Red Blood Cell Transfusion Rate and Risk Factors After Hemiarthroplasty in Elderly Patients With Femoral Neck Fracture

Abstract: ObjectiveThis study aimed to determine the rate and risk factors of allogeneic red blood cell transfusions (ABT) after hemiarthroplasty (HA) in elderly patients with femoral neck fracture (FNF).MethodsThe subjects of the study were elderly patients (≥65 years old) who were admitted to the geriatric trauma orthopedics ward of Beijing Jishuitan Hospital between March 2018 and June 2019 for HA treatment due to an FNF. The perioperative data were collected retrospectively, and univariate and multivariate stepwise … Show more

“…The perioperative blood transfusion rate of orthopedic surgery ranged from approximately 6.9-56.8% [24][25][26]. Speci cally, the perioperative blood transfusion rate for femur fracture operations and hip replacements can be as high as 70-80% [25,27]. In this study, the perioperative blood transfusion rate for patients with femoral, hip, or pelvic fractures was 36.0%.…”

“…In addition, the following barriers with frequencies greater than 10% were also included in the analysis as possible predictors, analyzed as present or absent: lack of scientific knowledge, organizational difficulties, lack of time, lack of stimulus to develop a good undergraduate thesis, problems in the student-advisor relationship, lack of adequate facilities at education institutions, and absence of remarkable difficulties. Possible predictors were excluded from the model until the p -value for all remaining predictors was smaller than 0.05 [ 35 ]. The assumption of multicollinearity was met (tolerance > 0.68) and the inspection of standardized residual values revealed no outliers for dissemination analysis, 10 outliers for international publication analysis (standard residual = 3.72–4.31), and three outliers for national publication analysis (standard residual = 3.36).…”
