“…Our data demonstrated that LPS induced apoptosis in HUVECs by decreasing the SOD, CAT, GST and GPx activities, and preservation of these endogenous antioxidant activities may protect the HUVECs against oxidative stress. Previous experiments have demonstrated that allicin reduces intracellular ROS expression [32] and also attenuates oxidative stress by directly increasing glutathione (GSH) expression [33]. Consistent with these previous results, our data confirmed that allicin attenuates the LPS-induced endothelial injury by decreasing the ROS level and inducing the endogenous antioxidant activities.…”

“…Allicin has been shown to have different health-promoting effects in several studies; for example, allicin can be used as a cardioprotective agent and is associated with increased endothelial function [41]. Also, there are data comprehensively showing that different mechanisms mediate its anti-tumor effects in various types of tumor cells [42,43]. In our study, we focused on how allicin inhibits CCA cell proliferation and invasion through STAT3 signaling.…”

“…Targeting STAT3 in tumors via various methods has shown beneficial effects in both preclinical and clinical studies [47]. Allicin-induced cell apoptosis is a complicated process that is mediated through various pathways and is regulated by many apoptosis-related proteins [43,48]. Moreover, previous studies have documented that STAT3 is able to affect tumor initiation and promotion [49].…”

“…Previous studies reveal that shikonin dramatically inhibits the migration and invasion of PTC cells via suppressing EMT and inhibiting the expressions of slug and MMP-2, -9, and -14. Furthermore, shikonin induces PTC cell apoptosis by targeting several signaling pathways, suppressing ERK/AKT and DNMT1, and activating p16/Rb and caspase-3-dependent mitochondrial pathways [57,117,118]. e oral administration of 2.0 mg/kg shikonin does not cause any liver injury in mice, thereby indicating its safety [117].…”
