Allergy and Oxidative Stress

Abstract: Tlen jako pierwiastek biogenny warunkuje przebieg podstawowych procesów biochemicznych gwarantujących przeżycie komórki. Niestety, w szczególnych warunkach wysoce reaktywne formy tlenu (RFT) mogą wywierać toksyczny efekt na organizm. W niewielkich ilościach RFT są niezbędne do prawidłowego funkcjonowania komórki, jednak ich nasilone wytwarzanie, przekraczające skuteczność działania systemów antyoksydacyjnych, określane mianem stresu oksydacyjnego, sprzyja zaburzeniom struktury i funkcji komórek oraz tkanek. “…Most likely, this is the first observation that the induction of LAR symptoms may produce a systemic antioxidant response. There is evidence that oxidative stress plays a significant role in atopic disease, for example, in AR [21, 22]. The decrease in antioxidant enzymes in patients with SAR was also observed in the present study.…”

“…Since mitochondria are one of the main sources of ROS in the body, we were interested to look for associations between antimitochondrial antibodies (AMA) (AC-21 pattern) and the activity of SOD isoenzymes. It is known that the mitochondrial matrix predominantly contains the manganese isoform of superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) [ 102 , 103 ]. Our hypothesis was not confirmed.…”

“…Glutathione reductase is an enzyme found in both the cytosol and mitochondria of the cell. It participates in maintaining the correct concentration of the reduced form of glutathione in the body, catalysing the following reaction: GS-SG+NADPH+H+→2GSH+NADP+ (GS-SG, oxidized glutathione) [32]. Reduced glutathione has strong antioxidant properties.…”
