Allergy and Ménière’s disease

Abstract: Ménière's disease (MD), which by definition is idiopathic, has been ascribed to various causes, including both inhalant and food allergies. Patients with MD report higher rates of allergy history and positive skin or in vitro tests compared to a control group of patients with other otologic diseases and to the general public. Recent immunologic studies have shown higher rates of circulating immune complexes, CD4, and other immunologic components in patients with MD compared to normal controls. Published treatm… Show more

“…Moreover, Rask-Andersen et al [1994] created the term 'saccitis' to identify the presence of signs of cytotoxic interactions between immune system and ear epithelial cells. Accordingly, serum autoantibodies against internal ear antigens as well as circulating immunocomplexes have been reported in MD patients [Hsu et al, 1990;Derebery, 1997;Yoo et al, 2001;Riente et al, 2004]. Furthermore, MD patients show many features of autoimmune disease, such as a positive family in some histories, the association with certain HLA loci (Cw7, A1, B8) as well as good response to steroid therapy [Shea, 1983;Xenellis et al, 1986, Garcia-Purriños et al, 2005.…”

“…The systemic immune challenge resulted in an allergic reaction within the inner ear leading to endolymphatic hydrops, which has been previously reported [3][4][5][6][7][8]. From then on the vertigo would occur during or after meals, and the associated tinnitus, aural pressure, hearing loss, and other MD symptoms emerged.…”

“…Allergy, metabolic disturbances, trauma, and inflammatory disorders are all possible contributory factors [2]. Allergy also plays a role in the production of the symptoms of MD in adult disorders [3][4][5][6][7][8]. Besides allergy, dysautonomia also contributes to the symptoms of MD in adult patients [9,10].…”

“…In some other studies, MD was associated to particular human leucocyte antigen haplotypes like thyroid autoimmunity [19]. Other studies have incriminated the effect of inhalant and food allergy to MD [20].…”
