To explore a possible influence of the immune system in the development of brain tumors, we evaluated the relationship between history of allergies and autoimmune diseases and risk of brain tumors within a large, hospital-based casecontrol study. Cases (n ‫؍‬ 782) were patients recently diagnosed with glioma (n ‫؍‬ 489), meningioma (n ‫؍‬ 197) or acoustic neuroma (n ‫؍‬ 96) at hospitals in Boston, Phoenix and Pittsburgh (USA). Controls (n ‫)997؍‬ were patients hospitalized for a variety of nonmalignant conditions and frequency-matched to cases by hospital, age, sex, race/ethnicity and distance of residence from hospital. Research nurses collected data by personal interview of patients. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated using unconditional logistic regression. There was a significant inverse association between glioma and history of any allergies ; glioma; meningioma; neuroma, acoustic; adult; risk factors; hypersensitivity; autoimmune diseases Despite much study, the etiology of brain tumors remains largely unknown. Several familial cancer syndromes, such as neurofibromatosis, tuberous sclerosis and Li-Fraumeni syndrome, are associated with increased risk but these account for less than 5% of all cases. 1-3 Only 1 environmental risk factor, ionizing radiation, is well established. 1 In the continued search for clues to the etiology of brain tumors, it is important to consider factors that might protect against brain tumors as well as factors that might cause them. Recent studies raise the question of whether persons with a hyperstimulated immune system might be at reduced risk of brain cancer.Results of case-control studies published during the past decade 4 -9 suggest an approximately 40% lower risk of glioma, but not meningioma, associated with a history of allergic diseases, including asthma, eczema and others. Evidence from prospective studies is very limited, largely because brain cancer is an uncommon disease. 10 Diabetes also has been negatively associated with risk of glioma in some studies 5,11 but not in others. 7,8,12,13 Several cohort studies of patients with rheumatoid arthritis, 14 pernicious anemia 15 and multiple sclerosis 16,17 failed to demonstrate a decreased risk of brain tumors. The findings regarding infections and brain tumors, while suggestive of a negative association, are mixed. 5,7,8,18,19 Although available data on a broad range of specific medical disorders are inconsistent, immunologically mediated conditions warrant further investigation as factors that might interfere with brain tumor development.Here, we report the associations between history of allergies and autoimmune diseases and risk of glioma, meningioma and acoustic neuroma based on data from a large, case-control study conducted at 3 hospitals in the United States. The purpose of the study was to examine home conditions, housing satisfactions, and allergen avoidance practices of people with allergic rhinitis, focusing on female patients who lived in an urban area in a hot, humid climate. The Morris and Winter theory of housing adjustment provides a theoretical base for this study. Nine hypotheses were tested to investigate interrelationships among home conditions, housing satisfaction in terms of health issues, allergen avoidance practices, and age. A sample of 41 female allergy patients aged 20 to 77 years completed a screening questionnaire and an in-depth survey questionnaire. The researcher visited their dwellings to conduct home observations and to take photos.Dust mite allergens were reported as the most common allergy triggers. Presence of cockroaches, presence of furry pets outdoors, molds in bathrooms, and molds in kitchens were the most common problematic home conditions. Open shelves, bookcases, drapes, horizontal blinds, and foam rubber pillows were the most common allergy related items found in respondents' bedrooms. Concerning health issues, the majority of the respondents were satisfied with their homes. Allergen avoidance practices were not followed regularly, particularly, using allergen-proof pillowcases and sheets, washing bedding in hot water, wearing a particle mask when vacuuming, using an exhaust fan, an air cleaner, a dehumidifier, and cockroach traps. The respondents who received suggestions from doctors were more likely to follow allergen avoidance practices than those who did not receive suggestions.The result shows a significant negative relationship between problematic home conditions and housing satisfaction in terms of health issues. A significant negative relationship between age and allergen avoidance practices was found. Older sufferers were less likely to use allergen-proof products. They also lived in older homes that were more likely to have allergy related conditions. The most common obstacles that prevented respondents from improving their homes in order to avoid allergens were cost of products, emotional attachment to pets, not having time to improve homes, and procrastination. Based on these findings, design recommendations, home maintenance recommendations, and lifestyle practice recommendations were developed.iii

Т ермин «ринит» применим для большой гетеро-генной группы заболеваний с различной этио-логией и патофизиологическими механизмами развития, которые объединены общей клинической кар-тиной в виде 4 основных симптомов: заложенности носа, выделений из носа различного характера, чиханья и зуда в носу. При этом комбинации симптомов могут быть раз-личными, могут дополняться другими болезненными ощу-щениями в виде нарушения обоняния, образования корок в носу и т. д. В настоящее время одним из основных параметров оценки состояния пациента и эффективности проводимой терапии является показатель качества жизни, связанного со здоровьем (Health-related quality of life), который, с точки зрения больного, имеет большее значе-ние, чем количественные показатели лабораторных ана-лизов или других объективных методов исследования. Это многомерное понятие, дифференцированно опреде-ляющее влияние конкретного заболевания и проводи-мых лечебных мероприятий на психологическое, эмоци-ональное и физическое состояние человека [1].По данным проведенных исследований, которые чаще всего выполнены при аллергическом рините (АР), практи- terms «Hypertrophic rhinitis» and «Vasomotor rhinitis» were used for non-allergic rhinitis, while code J30.4 and the terms «Allergic rhinitis» or «Vasomotor-allergic rhinitis» were used for allergic genesis. The diagnosis «Intermittent AR» was indicated once, and severity was mentioned only in 2 patients. In AR group (216 people), a comprehensive study was performed in 6.5% of cases, the diagnosis was established empirically in 52.7% of cases. Antihistamines were prescribed in 27.3% of cases, intranasal corticosteroids in 77.8%, montelukast in 9.7%, allergen-specific immunotherapy was performed in 1.9%. In non-allergic rhinitis (563 patients), 77.4% intranasal received corticosteroids, 7.5% received antihistamines, 3.7% -montelukast, 4.8% underwent surgical treatment. In both groups, original methods of therapy in the form of local antibiotics, homeopathic drugs, bacterial lysates were reported. In the AR group, a violation of the step-by-step therapy regimen was identified.
