“…It is also found to be respon sible for the high incidence of rhinitis in the Brisbane region of Australia where P hysterophorus has spread in recent years [Stewart J.A., personal commun.]. The stud ies carried out by Wedncr et al [8,21] have stressed the im portance of this weed as a source of allergic rhinitis in the Gulf coast region of the US. The high degree of cross-reactivity between Parthenium and ragweed pollen allergens suggests that individuals sensitized to Parthe nium may develop type-I hypersensitivity reactions to ragweed and vice versa when they travel to regions in fested with the weed to which they were not previously exposed.…”

“…Among these, 28% were positive for both ragweed and Parthenium, while 30% and 8% of the total sera were positive only for ragweed or Parthenium allergens, respectively. Based on RAST and ELISA inhibition data obtained from the present investi gation and from earlier studies [21], it is clear that al though there is high degree of cross-reactivity between the two pollen allergens, they contain unique epitopes which are recognized by persons exposed to one or the other pollen.…”

“…Studies of cross-reactivity among different ragweeds (short, giant, western and false) led to the interpretation that these ragweeds contain the same allergens in roughly comparable portions, whereas southern and slender ragweed possessed fewer of these allergens in lesser amounts. Other weed pollens which are considered to be clinically important include mugwort Artemisia vulgaris (Nilsen et al, 1991), Parthenium hysterophorus (Wedner et al, 1989), Parietaria (Corbi et al, 1986;Oreste et aL, 1991) and Plantago (Watson and Constable, 1991).…”
