Allergic reaction to acrylic resin in a patient with a provisional crown: case report

Abstract: <p>Acrylic resins are widely used in dentistry, especially in orthodontics and prosthetics. Patients: this article reports the case of a leukodermic 33-year-old male who reported discomfort and pain due to an erythematous lesion in the first left premolar after the placement of an acrylic resin temporary restoration. Discussion: The signs and symptoms presented by the patient and his report of visiting the rural countryside generated concern regarding the possible diagnosis, which led to a more invasive … Show more

“…Regarding the conventional composite possible eluting substances are the residual monomers of the matrix: BisGMA, BisEMA, and TEGDMA besides photoinitiator, pigments and further additives [50]. Residual monomers are suspected, for example, of causing allergies and hypersensitivities in patients or of having cytotoxic, mutagenic and estrogenic effects on cells [52][53][54][55][56]. The cytotoxic effect varies depending on the monomer type, and Kraus et al [57] observed that the cytotoxic effect of BisGMA is more pronounced than that of TEGDMA on osteoblast-like cells.…”

“…The elution of non-crosslinked components from dental resin-based materials into saliva and thus potentially into the system of the human body is a critical factor in the development and application of these materials. Residual monomers are suspected, for example, of causing allergies and hypersensitivities [ 8 ] in patients or of having cytotoxic, mutagenic and estrogenic effects on cells [ 8 12 ]. The extent of the elution depends, for instance, on the elution medium, mechanical stress, aging, hydrolysis or enzymatic degradation [ 13 16 ].…”

“…Incomplete polymerization can cause tissue irritation. Kostic.et al, 2018 (53) and Mesquita et al, 2017 (54) revealed that monomer initiated inflammation in subcutaneous tissue-layer. Even the toxic could be subsided, but the inflammation continued for period.…”
