Allergic contact dermatitis to methacrylates in ECG electrode dots

Abstract: Acrylates are used widely in acrylic nails, dental restorative materials, paint, varnish, printing ink, adhesives, glue, orthopaedic prostheses, bone cement and diathermy pads. This is the first case of allergic contact dermatitis to methacrylates in electrocardiogram electrode dots reported in the literature.

“…Four cases of ACD induced by disposable electrocardiogram (ECG) electrodes containing acrylates have been reported in the literature . In these reports, the diagnoses were based on positive patch test reactions to the hydrogel part ‘as is’, even if its precise acrylate composition or the relevance of positive patch tests for some (meth)acrylates was not identified.…”

“…Since 2001, some cases of allergic contact dermatitis caused by ECG and TENS electrodes have been reported . In these articles, the authors pointed to acrylates as the responsible allergens.…”

“…Numerous and heterogeneous components of medical devices may cause allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) . Among medical devices used in cardiology, electrocardiogram (ECG) electrodes can cause ACD and many allergens have been reported, for example (meth)acrylates and non‐acrylate components such as propylene glycol, p‐tert ‐butylphenol formaldehyde resin, nickel and rarely hidden allergens (eg, [modified] colophonium or acrylic acid monomers) . In this work, a new case of ACD caused by monomeric acrylic acid (2‐propenoic acid) (CAS no.…”
