Allergen databases

Abstract: Allergies represent a significant medical and industrial problem. Molecular and clinical data on allergens are growing exponentially and in this article we have reviewed nine specialized allergen databases and identified data sources related to protein allergens contained in general purpose molecular databases. An analysis of allergens contained in public databases indicates a high level of redundancy of entries and a relatively low coverage of allergens by individual databases. From this analysis we identify … Show more

“…A number of allergen databases that differ with respect to the number of molecules listed as allergens and to the type of information displayed have been reviewed (Brusic et al, 2003) (Gendel and Jenkins, 2006;Mari et al, 2006;Schein et al, 2007;Gendel, 2009 In this opinion, only food allergens listed in the IUIS database as of December 2013 will be mentioned and discussed in the sections dedicated to specific allergenic foods, unless otherwise specified.…”

“…Therefore, allergen databases represent very crucial resources for basic allergy research as they are involved in archival of available allergen knowledge. Many allergen-specific databases have been developed in the past few years although they differ from each other with respect to their objectives, type of data archived, accessibility of contents, and the level of annotation and applications [30]. In addition to dedicated allergen databases, primary bioinformatics databases also document significant data on allergens.…”

“…Other databases are specialized on allergens, as Immune Epitope Database [16]. Lists of databases of allergens or bioactive peptides are available in literature [17] or by surfing the net. Similarly, for bioactive peptides I just quote the BIOPEP resource [18] that includes subsections for allergens.…”
