Article HistoryAllelopathy is the inhibitory effect of one plant on another by releasing chemicals through leaching, root exudation and residue decomposition. Allelopathic inhibition involves the interaction of different classes of chemicals which affect germination, plant growth and development. Studies have been done showing that Bidens pilosa has allelopathic effects on maize, sorghum and lettuce but information on it's effect on Amaranthus dubius is lacking. Amaranthus dubius has become one of Kenya's most important vegetables. It's famous for its high protein content and medicinal properties. This study was done to investigate allelopathic effects of B. pilosa on germination and growth of A. dubius. Different concentrations of B. pilosa extract were prepared (0%,25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%) using tap water as control . Twenty seeds were germinated in petri dishes lined with filter paper, then soaked with the aqueous extract solutions. The treatments were replicated four times and data was collected for two weeks. Growth tests were carried out in the greenhouse using 24 3Litre pots. Twenty seeds were planted in each pot and leaves of B.pilosa of different amounts (0g, 20g, 40g, 60g, 80g, and 100g) were added into the soil. Treatments were replicated four times and data collected for six weeks and subjected to Analysis of Variance using SAS package. Treatment means were compared using Least Significance Difference (P≤0.05). The aqueous extract of B. pilosa significantly reduced germination rate. Fresh leaf biomass of B. pilosa significantly increased shoot height, leaf number,and leaf area, fresh and dry weights. Leaf biomass of B. pilosa had no significant effect on root length and chlorophyll content. The study revealed that B. pilosa has potential use as green manure in crop production. Contribution/ Originality:This study is one of very few studies which have investigated allelopathic effects of Bidens pilosa on germination and growth of Amaranthus dubius.

Resumo: A alelopatia pode ser definida como o efeito inibitório ou estimulatório que uma planta exerce sobre a outra por meio da liberação de compostos químicos no ambiente. Diversas espécies do gênero Solanum apresentam propriedades alelopáticas e medicinais. A Solanum paniculatum L. (jurubeba) é uma espécie nativa do Brasil utilizada na medicina popular. O presente estudo objetivou avaliar a atividade alelopática de extratos aquosos de raízes de S. paniculatum na germinação e no crescimento inicial de alface. Os extratos foram preparados sob a forma de decocção e maceração nas concentrações 0, 3, 6, 12, 25, 50 e 100 mg mL-1. Como tratamento controle, foi utilizada água destilada. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, organizado em esquema fatorial 2 x 7, sendo 2 tipos de extratos (decocto e macerado) e 7 concentrações, com 4 repetições de 50 sementes de alface por concentração. Foram avaliadas as seguintes variáveis: índice de velocidade de germinação (IVG), primeira contagem (PC), porcentagem de germinação (PG), comprimento da parte aérea (CPA) e comprimento da parte radicular (CPR). Observou-se que os extratos influenciaram em todas as variáveis, sendo que, no macerado, houve uma maior redução do IVG, da PC, da PG e do CPR. O extrato macerado apresentou maior atividade alelopática quando comparado ao decocto. Em ambos, na concentração de 100 mg mL-1 , foram registradas maiores inibições do CPA e do CPR, não havendo crescimento das plântulas de alface. Conclui-se que extratos aquosos de raízes de S. paniculatum possuem efeito alelopático inibitório sobre a germinação e o crescimento inicial de alface. Palavras-chave: jurubeba; decocção; maceração. The experiment was completely randomized in a 2 x 7 factorial design, with two types of extracts (decoction and maceration) and seven concentrations, being four repetitions of 50 lettuce seeds per concentration. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the ethanolic crude extracts and fractions of the species Senecio westermanii Dusén on Lactuca sativa L. (lettuce) and Allium cepa L. (onion) seeds. We assessed the germination, growth, root respiration and photosynthesis of the target species in Petri dishes (9.0 cm diameter) containing filter paper n°6. The study was conducted using 50 seeds per plate and held in 4 replicates per concentration of each sample. In the germination there was an inhibitory effect of fractions hexane (FH) and chloroform (FCl) at concentrations of 500 and 1000 µg/mL. There was a reduction in the radicle growth of lettuce by 14 to 24% and a reduction of hypocotilum by 14 to 28%. As for the radicle of the onion was up 74% reduction to the FCl and the coleoptile was 24 and 45% reduction for FH and FCl, respectively. Inhibitory effects in the root respiration of lettuce were detected in all the samples analyzed, with results ranging from 16 to 83%. For the seeds of A. cepa, there was an encouragement for the FCl and ethyl acetate fractions (FAE), with results ranging from 94 to 142% and 76 to 150%, respectively. With regard to the photosynthesis of L. sativa, there was no significant difference between the control, and as for the A. cepa, there was a strain in inhibition concentrations of 250 and 500 µg/mL, which ranged from 27 to 68%. The samples of S. westermanii caused changes in the target species and thus can be used as a natural herbicide.
