Imperata grassland is among the largest proportions of marginal lands in Indonesia. Despite the dominance of Imperata cylindrica grass, certain plant species are able to compete and live together with this species, suggesting window of opportunity that the grasslands can be restored. Yet, the existing diversity and composition of plants in Imperata grasslands may vary due to differences in climatic and soil conditions. This study aims to determine the plant diversity and composition at three Imperata grasslands in Bogor, Katingan, and Kupang, Indonesia. Data were collected using systematic sampling by establishing quadratic observation plots with size of each plot was 1 x 1 m2. The total number of species found in Imperata grasslands in those three study sites was 81 species, belonging to 68 genera and 30 families. In the Bogor site, the dominant species were Imperata cylindrica, Ageratum conyzoides, and Phyllanthus niruri, while in the Katingan site was dominated by I. cylindrica, Scleria ciliaris, and Cyanthillium cinereum and in the Kupang site was dominated by I. cylindrica and Tridax procumbens. The Imperata grassland in Bogor had low species richness, moderate species diversity, the abundance distribution of each species tends to be uniform, and the occurred species did not tend to dominate. The Katingan and Kupang Imperata grasslands had low species richness, low species diversity, the abundance distribution of each species tends to be uneven, and were more dominated by I. cylindrica. Controlling abundance of I. cylindrica is required in those three research sites in order to stimulate the growth of other plant species, which is in turn to maintain and restore biodiversity.

The extract of crofton weed ( Eupatorium adenophorum ) inhibits seed germination and weed growth; however, the physiological mechanisms underlying the effect of crofton weed extract on the modulation of seedling growth and root system development remain largely unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of the leaf extract of crofton weed (LECW) on primary root (PR) growth in maize seedlings. Treatment with LECW markedly inhibited seed germination and seedling growth in a dose-dependent manner. Physiological analysis indicated that the LECW induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation in root tips, thereby leading to cell swelling and deformation both in the root cap and elongation zone of root tips, finally leading to cell death in root border cells (RBCs) and PR growth inhibition. The LECW also inhibited pectin methyl esterase (PME) activity, thereby decreasing the RBC number. Taken together, our results indicated that the LECW inhibited PR growth by inducing ROS accumulation and subsequent cell death in RBCs. The present study provides a better understanding of how the LECW modifies root system development and provides insight for evaluating the toxicity of crofton weed extracts in plants.

The present works reported a new technique for conditioning and controlling the germination of healthy Quercus suber L. acorns under the antifungal, allelopathic and residual effects of five volatile oils and their hydrolates obtained by hydrodistillation of plant material and then were subjected to a GC/MS to identify their chemical composition. Monoterpenes were found to be dominant in both oils with amount ranging between 57.59 and 98.88%, followed by sesquitepenes (1.28- 40.07%), whereas ditepenes were found only in Pistacia lentiscus L. volatile oil (15.54%). Pistacia lentiscus L. and Myrtus communis L. volatile oils had the potent antifungal and fungistatic activity where no contamination were registered, a contamination percentage of 10% succeeded by a fungistatic effect was registered in both oils from Calamintha hispidula Boissier and reuter., Lavandula dentata L. and Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh, whereas the control exhibited the weakest antifungal activity with 70% of contamination. Moreover, early germination during storage was more inhibited by volatile oils (10- 20%) than by the control (50%). Hydrolates were less effective than volatile oils in both fungi-infestaion (10- 80%) and germination (50- 90%). The second bio-assay conducted in non allelopathic conditions revealed that acorns previously treated by both volatile oils and hydrolates have resumed their germination with respective increases of 30 to 80% and 10%, respectively. Radicle elongation was, however, more pronounced for Hydrolates (0.13 - 0.62cm) than for volatile oils (0.06- 0.44cm). Owing to the antifungal, fungistatic and stimulating effects observed, the results of this study may help to develop new plant-based biocide for the control of fungi-infestation and early germination limiting the long-term safe storage of acorns.
