Allelopathic potential of 73 weed species in Pakistan

Abstract: This study represents the comprehensive screening of allelopathic activity of weeds in Pakistan by applying sandwich and dish pack methods. The source for existing research of weed control towards classifying the potent organic compounds for controlling weeds in crops is the screening of large quantities of plants. Strong allelopathic weeds species have been acknowledged from analysis to provide direction for further research. Under laboratory conditions 73 weeds species were examined for their allelopathic po… Show more

“…The highest phytotoxicity was seen in the weeds used in this study. These harmful weeds may contain powerful phytotoxic compounds that could be used in the development of herbicides (Khan et al, 2019). However, allelopathic active plants, C. spectabilis, S. sesban, D. cordata, H. javanica, and O. barrelieri were not used for the field trials due to the unavailability of a bulk quantity of plant materials.…”

“…Over the past 40 years, the use of chemicals in agriculture has far surpassed other methods within integrated management, becoming the main tool for weed control in most areas. However, as a consequence of the indiscriminate use of these substances, herbicide-resistant weeds germplasms are constantly increasing, leaving some farmers not only with crop losses, but with few options to fight weeds (Khan et al, 2019). Based on a better understanding of weed biology and ecology, the development of new weed management products and technology can lead to more sustainable weed control strategies (Westwood et al 2018).…”
