-Phosphorus-bearing Fe and Ni sulfides represent a new type of phosphorus compounds and are characteristic accessory phases of CM chondrites. The proportions of atoms in the sulfides can be approximated by the equation (Fe + Ni)/P = 0.965 ± 0.003 (1 σ ) · S / P + 1.255 ± 0.036 (1 σ ) . Sulfides with high S/P ratios are systematically richer in Fe and poorer in Ni compared with low-S/P sulfides. Their characteristic minor elements are Cr, Ca, Co, K, and Na. The contents of Cr and Ca may reach several weight percent, but their incorporation does not affect the relation between (Fe + Ni)/P and S/P. This is also true of light elements (O and H), which probably occur in the P-bearing sulfides in certain amounts. The sulfides are usually associated with schreibersite, barringerite, eskolaite, and daubreelite. A negative correlation was observed between the Fe/Ni ratios of coexisting P-bearing sulfides and phosphides. Metallic iron was never found in association with the sulfides. It can be suggested that P-bearing sulfide is a primary phase rather than a secondary alteration product formed under the conditions of the CM chondrite parent body. This phase had to be stable in the solar nebula after the formation of Ca-Al inclusions and before the condensation of Fe-Ni metal. At high temperatures, P-bearing sulfide with low Fe/Ni and S/P ratios coexists with schreibersite in the solar gas. During condensation schreibersite is replaced by barringerite, which is accompanied by a decrease in the Fe/Ni ratio of phosphides and an increase in the S/P and Fe/Ni ratios of P-bearing sulfides. Trace element data suggest that the P-bearing sulfides could be formed in the solar nebula by the sulfidization of a precursor phase of extrasolar origin.

An electron microprobe study has been carried out on platinum-group minerals, accessory phases, and chromite in several chromite deposits of the Alapaevsk ophiolite (Central Urals, Russia) namely the Bakanov Kluch, Kurmanovskoe, Lesnoe, 3-d Podyony Rudnik, Bol'shaya Kruglyshka, and Krest deposits. These deposits occur in partially to totally serpentinized peridotites. The microprobe data shows that the chromite composition varies from Cr-rich to Al-rich. Tiny platinum-group minerals (PGM), 1-10 µm in size, have been found in the chromitites. The most abundant PGM is laurite, accompanied by minor cuproiridsite and alloys in the system Os-Ir-Ru. A small grain (about 20 µm) was found in the interstitial serpentine of the Bakanov Kluch chromitite, and its calculated stoichiometry corresponds to (Ni,Fe) 5 P. Olivine, occurring in the silicate matrix or included in fresh chromite, has a mantle-compatible composition in terms of major and minor elements. Several inclusions of amphibole, Na-rich phlogopite, and clinopyroxene have been identified. The bimodal Cr-Al composition of chromite probably corresponds to a vertical distribution in the ophiolite sequence, implying formation of Cr-rich chromitites in the deep mantle, and Al-rich chromitites close to the Moho-transition zone, in a supra-subduction setting. The presence of abundant hydrous silicate inclusions, such as amphibole and phlogopite, suggests that the Alapaevsk chromitites crystallized as a result of the interaction between a melt enriched in fluids and peridotites. Laurite and cuproiridsite are considered to be magmatic in origin, i.e., entrapped as solid phases during the crystallization of chromite at high temperatures. The sulfur fugacity was relatively high to allow the precipitation of Ir-bearing sulfides, but below the Os-OsS 2 buffer. The alloys in the system Os-Ir-Ru are classified as secondary PGM, i.e., formed at low temperature during the serpentinization process. The (Ni,Fe) 5 P phase is the first occurrence of a Ni-phosphide in terrestrial samples. Its composition indicates that it may be a new mineral. However, the small size has, so far, prevented a crystallographic study to support this conclusion.

ABSTR ACTThe original description of nickelphosphide from the Butler meteorite [(Ni 1.83 Fe 1.21 ) S3.04 P 0.96 to (Ni 1.71 Fe 1.28 Co 0.01 ) S3.00 P 1.00 ] lacks detailed and accurate powder data À with only 11 observed reflections down to 1.37 Å . Consequently, no crystal structure information for this phase is available. Here we present the crystal structure for a synthetic analogue of the phase found in the Vicenice IID medium octahedrite (with a mean empirical formula of (Ni 1.69 Fe 1.31 ) S3.00 P 1.00 ) and a hypothetical Ni 3 P end-member. Unit-cell dimensions of the synthetic analogue of Ni 1.68 Fe 1.33 P 0.99 composition from individual peak profile fitting of XRD data collected with Cu radiation are a = 9.0168(2) Å , c (8) Å 3 . The space group of the mineral is I4 and Z = 8. The crystal structure refined from powder data by the Rietveld method is consistent with that refined and published for Fe 3 P and Ni 3 P synthetic compounds as well as Fe-dominant schreibersite from single-crystal data. However, because of the similarity of the scattering of iron and nickel, we were not able to refine directly the site occupancies in the synthetic analogue of the nickelphosphide from the Vicenice iron meteorite.
