“…A study, using 2011 American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program data, which evaluated readmission after common major surgical procedures demonstrated that 30-day readmission rates across all surgical specialties was 7.3 per cent with significant variation within individual procedure types. 8 In another review of commercial health insurance records for patients who underwent colorectal procedures, 30-day readmission rates were 11 per cent and accounted for $300 million additional cost nationwide for colorectal surgery alone. 9 Although colorectal surgery procedures are associated with considerably high rates of readmission, more information is needed to identify those risk factors that predispose patients to hospital readmission.…”
