All-optical XOR in a semiconductor optical amplifier-assisted fiber Sagnac gate

Abstract: Abstract-All-optical Boolean XOR is demonstrated on a highspeed serial bit stream with a three-optical input fiber Sagnac interferometer switch, which uses a semiconductor optical amplifier. Full duty cycle bit switching has been demonstrated up to 5 GHz with contrast ratio as high as 14.6 dB.Index Terms-High-speed logic, optical gates, semiconductor optical amplifiers.

“…The device uses the fast gain saturation and recovery of a SOA inserted in the interferometer, effected by an externally inserted and synchronized controlling optical signal to switch bit-by-bit the state of the gate. It has been shown to be capable to operate as a 4 : 1 add-drop multiplexer on a 40 Gbit/s OTDM channel [24] with as little as 50 fJ energy per pulse [25]. Clearly the replacement of the SOA gates with the SOA-assisted Sagnac gates, will give the ability to the OXC to operate as an add-drop OTDM node for any selected wavelength channel before been forwarded to the appropriate output fibre.…”

“…Figure 1 shows the AOLS node-architecture proposed by the Lasagne project. The main functionalities such as label reading, label insertion and packet routing are based on the use of all-optical logic gates [8][9][10][11]. These functionalities are performed by the AOLS-block (Fig.…”
