Abstract:We report the demonstration of an all-optical, bias free and errorfree (bit-error-rate ~10 -12 ), 10Gbit/s non-return-to-zero (NRZ) to return-tozero (RZ) data format conversion using a 7.5µm diameter III-V-on-silicon microdisk resonator. The device is completely processed in a 200mm CMOS pilot line. The data format conversion is based on the phenomenon of pulse carving of an NRZ optical data stream by an optical clock. The underlying physical effect for the pulse carving is the change in the refractive index caused by the generation of free-carriers in a pump -probe configuration. We demonstrated experimentally 40 Gbit/s all-optical format conversions between return-to-zero (RZ) and nonreturn-tozero (NRZ) using a fiber delay interferometer (FDI) and a single semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). Firstly, 40 Gbit/s data format conversion from RZ to NRZ is realized using a FDI with temperature control and an optical bandpass filter (BPF). Then, 40 Gbit/s data format conversion from NRZ to RZ is implemented, using four-wave mixing (FWM) effect of SOA, by injecting synchronously NRZ signal and clock pulses into a single SOA. Presented method has some distinct advantages including multi-channel parallel processing, easy integration, convenient tuning, good stability, and so on, which has potential to be used in future optical networks that could combine wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and optical time domain multiplexing (OTDM) transmission techniques.

A novel all-optical sampling based on nonlinear polarization rotation in a semiconductor optical amplifier is presented. An analog optical signal and an optical pulses train are injected into semiconductor optical amplifier simultaneously, and the analog light modulates the output optical pulse through controlling the rotated angle of nonlinear polarization rotation of the optical pulse. Therefore, the sampling signals are delivered from the analog light to the optical clock pulses. The theoretical model is built up with polarization-dependent rate-equations. The experimental results at 40 GS/s demonstrate the feasibility of our proposed approach.
