All-laser-driven Thomson X-ray sources

Abstract: We discuss the development of a new generation of accelerator-based hard X-ray sources driven exclusively by laser light. High-intensity laser pulses serve the dual roles: first, accelerating electrons by laser-driven plasma wakefields, and second, generating X-rays by inverse Compton scattering. Such all-laser-driven X-rays have recently been demonstrated to be energetic, tunable, relatively narrow in bandwidth, short pulsed and well collimated. Such characteristics, especially from a compact source, are high… Show more

“…The Thomson process has been extensively studied [8][9][10]13,65,66,[72][73][74][75] and means to maximize the total photon yield N γ and to reduce the bandwidth have been proposed [74,76]. These are evaluated with respect to our special case of a confined radiation cone and compared to simulation results in Sec.…”

“…Thomson scattering (TS) sources are a promising candidate for medical XFI as they are touted with providing an intrinsic low bandwidth and divergence [8][9][10][11][12][13][14]. They are based on the radiation emission of relativistic electrons in optical laser fields [10,15,16].…”

“…Second, the fluence of the x-ray tube can be increased with new x-ray sources, such as the laser-driven Thomson xray source. 88,89 It is believed that XACT imaging will find broad applications in both basic research and clinical care. Considering the use of XACT in breast imaging, minimal x-ray exposure can generate a 3D acoustic image of the breast, 90 which dramatically reduces the radiation dose to patients when compared to conventional breast CT.…”
