All-cause mortality in treated HIV-infected adults with CD4 >=500/mm3 compared with the general population: evidence from a large European observational cohort collaboration

Abstract: Mortality patterns in most non-IDU HIV-infected individuals with high CD4 counts on cART are similar to those in the general population. The persistent role of a prior AIDS diagnosis underlines the importance of early diagnosis of HIV infection.

“…8 Non-IDU HIV-infected individuals who achieved high CD4 cell counts after starting cART were found to have mortality patterns similar to those in the general population. Mortality was found to be persistently higher in individuals with a prior AIDS diagnosis 9 , while the incidence of AIDS events continued to decline until CD4 cell counts were greater than 750 cells/mm 3 . 10 In patients with viral suppression, the risk of a new AIDS events or death followed a CD4 cell count gradient, even benefiting those with a CD4 cell count ≥500 cells/mm 3 .…”

“…The introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has changed the course of HIV infection, increasing life expectancy (1), but on the other hand making more prevalent diseases such as osteoporosis, neurocognitive impairment, renal disease, and cardiovascular events (2). Among these associated comorbidities, HIV-infected patients frequently experience metabolic complications such as insulin resistance (IR), increasing the risk of diabetes mellitus (DM) (3).…”
