Alkyl Xanthates:  New Capping Agents for Metal Colloids. Capping of Platinum Nanoparticles

Abstract: We investigate the properties of long-chain alkyl xanthate-capped platinum nanoparticles. First an uncapped platinum colloid, 4.0 ± 1 nm in diameter, is produced in an aqueous phase, and then the capping agent is added. The capped particles are hydrophobic and easily transfer into organic solvents. They can be dried and repetitively transferred to various organic liquids in a reversible manner. Xanthate-capped platinum colloids are more stable than the analogous thiol-capped particles (and certainly noncapped … Show more

“…In nanochemistry, alkylxanthates were firstly introduced as capping agents. 35,36 Very recently, metal salts of alkylxanthates served as perfect and versatile single-source precursors for synthesizing metal sulfide nanoparticles. 33,37 Cadmium ethylxanthate used in this work is more easily synthesized, air-stable, and even can be used under atmospheric bench-top conditions, which meets the goal of environmentally-friendly synthesis and low cost.…”

“…Potassium hexadecylxanthate and ferric hexadecylxanthate [Fe(C 16 H 33 OCS 2 ) 3 ] were synthesized according to the literature method. [20,21] Iron sulfide nanoflowers were prepared by pyrolyzing the aforementioned ferric hexadecylxanthate precursor. Typically, 0.4 g Fe(C 16 H 33 OCS 2 ) 3 was put into a Teflon-lined autoclave.…”
