“…The chemical shifts of the carbon atoms of alkaloids 2-5 are gathered in Table I. The striking analogy between the spectra of alkaloids 2 and 4 prompted us to attribute the methuenine structure to compound 2, since compound 4 was authenticated as 16-epimethuenine by direct comparison with a sample kindly provided by Dr. Morfaux (4).
