A balanced nutrition for enhanced nutrient use efficiency is important to achieve potential crop yield. A deficiency of secondary and micronutrients is known to impair growth and quality of oil seed crops such as sunflower. The present study examined the effect of foliar application of nano-scale zinc particles in combination with boron on the growth and yield attributes of sunflower cv. RFSH-130 in a controlled environment. The treatments comprised foliar application of different nanoparticles (ZnS @ 400 ppm and ZnO @ 1000 ppm) and conventional ZnSO4@ 5000 ppm at 35 and 55 DAS. Further, these were combined with or without spray of boron @ 0.5% at 40 DAS. The sizes of the green synthesized nanoparticles of ZnS and ZnO in the presence of a biopolymer, chetosan were 60 and 38 nm respectively. ZnS and ZnO in nano formulations were absorbed by sunflower foliage to a greater extent compared to bulk ZnSO4. The results revealed that green synthesized ZnS and ZNO nanoparticles enhanced the growth and yield of sunflower.

Cucurbita foetidissima and C. radicans are scarcely studied wild pumpkin species that grow in arid and semi-arid areas of Mexico and the United States. This study describes the morphological, proximal composition, metabolic finger-prints and seed protein profiles of C. foetidissima and C. radicans fruits collected in the wild during a one-year period in different locations of central-western Mexico. The results obtained complement the limited information concerning the fruit composition of C. foetidissima and greatly expand information in this respect regarding C. radicans. Morphology and proximal composition of their fruits varied significantly. Different metabolic fingerprints and seed protein profiles were detected between them and also with the chemical composition of domesticated Cucurbita fruits. The neutral lipids in seed, pulp and peels were rich in wax content and in unsaturated compounds, probably carotenoids and tocopherols, in addition to tri-, di- and mono-acylglycerols. The tri- and diacylglycerol profiles of their seed oils were different from commercial seed oils and between each other. They also showed unusual fatty acid compositions. Evidence of a possible alkaloid in the pulp and peel of both species was obtained in addition to several putative cucurbitacins. An abundance of phenolic acids was found in all fruit parts, whereas flavonoids were only detected in the peels. Unlike most cucurbits, globulins were not the main protein fraction in the seeds of C. radicans, whereas the non-structural carbohydrate and raffinose oligosaccharide content in their fruit parts was lower than in other wild cucurbit species. These results emphasize the significantly different chemical composition of these two marginally studied Cucurbita species, which was more discrepant in C. radicans, despite the notion regarding C. foetidissima as an aberrant species with no affinity to any other Cucurbita species.

Influence of Citrullus colocynthis (L.) shrad. Extract on glucose level, lipid metabolism and oxidative homeostasis parameters of animals under experimental diabetes mellitus Topicality. Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common chronic diseases. Among the methods of diabetes treating, phytotherapy occupies the remarkable place. Phytoproducts, as an alternative to synthetic drugs, are becoming increasingly popular due to the ability to exhibit multi-vector effects on the organism of the patient and to act in a complex manner.The aim of the study was to investigate the hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic and antioxidant activity of Citrullus colocynthis dry extract, as a representative of medicinal plants with antidiabetic action.Materials and methods. Hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic and antioxidant activity of C. colocynthis extract was investigated on Wistar rats with the model of type 2 diabetes mellitus. The plant extract was administered at doses of 50 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg, a reference drug "Arphazetyn" at a dose of 18 ml/kg for 28 days. The level of glucose was determined at the beginning and at the end of the experiment, the parameters of lipid (cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, VLDL, HDL) and oxidative homeostasis (malonic dialdehyde, catalase, superoxidedismutase) -on the last day of the study.Results and discussion. It has been established that C. colocynthis extract exhibits dose-dependent hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects. The most pronounced activity the plant extract exhibits at a dose of 100 mg/kg: lowers blood glucose levels as well as elevated parameters of lipid metabolism and increases the level of HDL. At a dose of 100 mg/kg it increases the activity of antioxidant enzymes, thereby reducing the level of malonic dialdehyde. The reference drug is inferior to the effectiveness of the C. colocynthis extract for all of these parameters.Conclusions. According to results of the study, C. colocynthis extract has hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic and antioxidant effects.Key words: C. colocynthis; type 2 diabetes; antioxidant activity; hypolipidemic action; C. colocynthis dry extract Г.
