“…AP activity is commonly used as an indicator for algal P-deficiency in natural aquatic ecosystems [ 43 , 44 , 45 ]. However, this study shows that AP activity also detects P-deficiency in laboratory algal species grown in real wastewater.…”

“…Four substrates have been used in the APA measurements, i.e., MUF-P 8,9,15-19,25-72 , DiFMUP 10,12,73-80 , MFP 13,[81][82][83][84][85] and pNPP [86][87][88][89][90][91][92][93][94] . Since a fluorescent (or colored) product is released when a substrate is hydrolysed by AP in a seawater sample, APA can be measured by detecting the changes in fluorescence (or color) over time.…”

“…However, high rates of APA can occur in DIP-replete coastal waters and estuaries, which has been attributed to heterotrophic microbes breaking down organic matter to access carbon and nitrogen (Davis and Mahaffey, 2017;Labry et al, 2016;Nicholson et al, 2006). High APA rates were reported for coastal waters affected by upwelling and run-off from land off south-western India (0-3180 nmol l -1 h -1 , Mamatha et al, 2015), which were not correlated with DIP, however, the use of pNPP assay substrate at a much higher concentration (1 mM) precludes a direct comparison to our data. In their study of coastal waters around Malaysia, Lim et al (2018) reported a correlation between bacterial abundance and water column APA, and consequently attributed the APA bacterial alkaline phosphatases.…”
