Alkali investigations in the Sudan

Abstract: (1) The cotton growing area in the Gezira consists of a heavy clay soil, the proportion of clay being about 50–60 per cent. in the upper layers with a maximum at about the 4th foot.(2) The water soluble salts amount to about 0·2 per cent. The proportion is highest at about the 3rd to 5th foot. The alkalinity (pH) is highest at the 2nd foot.(3) In the first 2 feet, the salts consist mainly of sodium carbonate and the third and fourth of sodium sulphate.(4) The irrigation (Blue Nile) water is of excellent qualit… Show more

“…Five seeds of dolichos bean were sown 28 December 1944 in each of thirty 10 in. pots filled with Gezira soil (see Joseph, 1925). In half the pots 0-2 g. Striga seed per pot was intimately mixed with the soil.…”

“…Kes. at 30°' Under Sudanese conditions the suspensions vary in temperature from 20 to 35° C, and a correction of 2 per cent, per 1° C. is applied to the readings to give specific resistance at 30° C. Joseph (5) has noted that informative results are obtained by this means in spite of the fact that equal conductances are not necessarily the result of equal weight concentrations. In this paper Joseph gives particulars as to the chemical and mechanical composition of various soils in the canalised area, and his figures may be taken as covering the samples examined in the present enquiry.…”

“…ABOUT 1000 square miles of the Eastern Gezira are irrigated from the Sennar Dam. The soil (Joseph & Martin, 1923;Joseph, 1925;Joseph & Whitfeild, 1927;Greene, 1928) is a heavy clay, strongly alkaline, of low permeability to water, and low in content of nitrogen and humus. Sulphates of sodium and calcium are present in the soil, and although the irrigation water is of good quality it brings appreciable amounts of sodium salts on the land.…”
