The present study aimed to investigate the macroscopic and histological structure of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of Larimichthyscrocea (Richardson, 1846). It consists of esophagus, stomach regions, pyloric caeca, intestinal regions, and rectum. Sixteen tubular light yellowish pyloric caeca of similar sizes were observed in all individuals. The digestive wall consists of mucosa, submucosa, muscularis, and adventitia. No major differences appeared in the structure of the tunica, epithelial cell types, connective tissues and musculature glands of L.crocea GIT. The mucosal epithelia in the oesophagus has longitudinal branched folds with frontward and hindmost zones. The gastric tunica mucosa has a characteristic folded structure and can be divided into three regions. The intestinal tunica mucosa is characterized by villi structures and numerous mucus-secreting cells. Mucus-secreting goblet cells were strongly positive to AB at pH 2.5 in the oesophagus (excluding gastro-oesophageal junction) and intestine mucosal regions, which indicates an abundance of carboxylate mucins. The surface epithelia of the gastric mucosa is PAS-positive and AB-negative. SEM examination revealed that cells in the epithelium of the esophagus have an unbroken apical layer and goblet cells. The intestinal coefficient (IC) of L.crocea was 0.80 ± 0.21, consistent with a carnivorous or omnivorous habit. Our study adds the knowledge of the digestive system of L.crocea and might be useful in the management of L.crocea stocks.

El sábalo (Prochilodus lineatus) es la especie más importante para la pesca comercial y de subsistencia en Argentina. Sin embargo, hace algunos años alcanzó una situación de riesgo que motivó que el cultivo en cautiverio sea impulsado por diversos sectores públicos y privados debido al interés en la conservación ambiental. Este pez presenta un rápido crecimiento, elevada fecundidad y rusticidad. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue analizar comparativamente estanques de cultivo de P. lineatus con dos tipos de fondo, uno de cemento y otro de tierra, a fin de identificar alguna condición que influya sobre la productividad de la especie. Fueron utilizados 450 juveniles de 60 días y 26 g de peso vivo promedio, a quienes se suministró alimento balanceado en base al 2% de la biomasa. Las variables de calidad de agua se registraron periódicamente, al igual que las biometrías, para ajustar la alimentación al crecimiento de los peces. El ensayo tuvo una duración de 340 días. Los parámetros físicoquímicos de calidad de agua permanecieron dentro de valores adecuados para la especie. Las variables productivas analizadas fueron: coeficiente de crecimiento específico, biomasa total (donde se observaron diferencias significativas, p<0,05) y tasa de supervivencia (sin diferencias significativas entre ambos tratamientos, p>0,05). Los resultados obtenidos demuestran que los estanques con fondo de cemento no permiten que el sábalo se desarrolle como lo hace en estanques con fondo de tierra. Sin embargo, representan una alternativa para el cultivo de la especie, que debería continuar evaluándose con el objeto de lograr el mantenimiento de una adecuada cantidad de material orgánico que satisfaga las necesidades de los peces en cultivo.

In South America, the knowledge of trematode diversity parasitizing freshwater fishes is still scarce, as less than 5% of the freshwater fish fauna has been examined for parasites. A similar situation applies to studies on digenean life cycles, which have become increasingly rare. Among the digenean families parasitizing freshwater fishes in the region, Haploporidae is considered the richest in species diversity. However, information about the developmental stages of haploporid life cycles remains fragmentary. Particularly, in Argentina, nine cercariae attributed to the family Haploporidae have been described using morphological analysis, and only two life cycles of this family have been completely elucidated. In this study a new type of cercaria, morphologically assigned to the family Haploporidae and collected from the snail Heleobia parchappii (Cochliopidae) in Los Padres shallow lake, Buenos Aires province, was identified using morphological and molecular techniques. The molecular analysis, based on 28S and ITS2 sequences, revealed that the cercariae were 100% identical to adult specimens of Saccocoelioides nanii (Haploporidae) parasitizing the fish Prochilodus lineatus (Prochilodontidae) from Los Talas, Buenos Aires province. Our results not only provide information about the life cycle of S.nanii but also show that a molecular and morphological approach can be extremely useful in identifying the developmental stages of digeneans and elucidating their life cycles.
