Aligned core/shell electrospinning of poly(glycerol sebacate)/poly(l‐lactic acid) with tuneable structural and mechanical properties

Abstract: Oriented scaffolds of biodegradable poly(glycerol sebacate)/poly(l‐lactic acid) core/shell fibres have been fabricated using core/shell electrospinning with a rotating mandrel at (a) 0 rpm and (b) 2000 rpm. The increased fibre alignment in the nonlinearly elastic fibre mats improved the modulus, ultimate tensile strength and elongation.

“…Also, in this case, a prepolymer is used for the synthesis. This form, as well as the cross-linked polymer, is more and more willingly used in electrospinning techniques. All of these contribute to the knowledge about the synthesis of PGS prepolymer underlying further research; this work is therefore extremely necessary and can indirectly help in achieving future intended applications of tissue engineering. The kinetics of poly(glycerol sebacate) polycondensation is still interesting and cited in most of the recent articles, which confirms the importance of this issue. , …”

“…Recently, PGS fibrous membranes were fabricated by coaxial electrospinning and blend electrospinning . PGS fibrous membranes with varying degrees of fiber alignment were also realized . Unlike conventional electrospinning, the methods used in these studies are technically demanding and require significant amount of work on optimizing operating conditions.…”

“…The mechanical properties of the materials were investigated, and as typically seen in aligned fiber systems, significant increases in failure stress and modulus and a reduction in failure strain were seen when materials were loaded in the fiber direction, as the large majority of fibers are directly loaded and recruited to resist the applied strain, with less capacity for fiber reorganization under loading …”
