Aligned carbon nanotube webs embedded in a composite laminate: A route towards a highly tunable electro-thermal system

Abstract: Highly aligned CNT webs, with an areal density of 0.019 g/m 2 , were produced by direct drawing of CNT 'forests' grown by chemical vapor deposition, to form a conductive heating element. These were subsequently inserted between pre-cured layers of unidirectional carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) and the electrical and thermal conductivity of the combined system were assessed under different curing conditions. Control composites specimens, cured under high-pressure, demonstrated a higher fibre volume fract… Show more

“…They have excellent mechanical properties since individual CNTs possess very high tensile strength in the range from 11 to 63 GPa, tensile Young's modulus of 1.0 to 1.3 TPa, and high ultimate fracture strain of about 10% [8][9][10][11]. Moreover, CNTs are flexible, lightweight, good heat and electricity conductors, thus being useful in a number of applications [12][13][14][15]. The most important mechanical applications of CNTs are high-strength ropes [2,16], fibers [17][18][19][20][21], polymer-and metal-matrix composites [22][23][24], solid lubricants [24,25], etc.…”

“…Therefore, CNT web was utilized as an electro-thermal heating element for anti-icing and deicing of composite structures. Highly aligned CNT-web-heater has negligible weight, quick and uniform heating, economical energy consumption, is compatible with CFR, and can be tuned both in terms of shape and performance to suit any surface and power requirement to achieve rapid deicing (Yao et al 2018, Molnár et al 2014. Yao et al (2018) investigated improved anti-icing and deicing systems made of highly aligned carbon nanotube webs.…”

“…Directly drawn CNT webs exhibit a uniform highly-aligned network, eliminating the agglomeration challenges encountered when dispersing in bulk resin. As the CNTs are highly aligned in the direction of draw, the resistivity perpendicular to the draw direction is approximately 20 times higher than that parallel to the draw direction [25]. Joints were subjected to quasi-static and cyclic loading tests to investigate the influence of CNT-SLW orientation on the damage sensing and joint performance.…”
