Alien leaf beetles (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae) of European Russia and some general tendencies of leaf beetle invasions

Abstract: Invasions of leaf beetles can cause tremendous economic consequences because some of these insects become major pests in invaded territories. We present the first inventory of alien Chrysomelidae of European Russia that appeared in the region in the 20th and 21st centuries (9 species) with analysis of the history of their invasions and detailed maps of distribution. This case study revealed some general tendencies of invasions of leaf beetles: (1) Recently, a dramatic increase in the rate of Chrysomelidae inva… Show more

“…In recent years, pest infestation in maize has become increasingly serious in arid and semi‐arid regions, similar to the case of Xinjiang Province . The coleopteran Monolepta hieroglyphica (Motschulsky), or leaf beetle, is an omnivorous insect that eats maize ear spike silk, thereby preventing pollination . M. hieroglyphica is the second main pest of maize in Xinjiang Province after maize borer …”

“…are often traded for these uses between many countries. This fact is helping the expansion of the distribution of C. americana, which was probably introduced in some countries along with the imported plants (Bieńkowski and Orlova-Bienkowskaja 2018). Adults and larvae of the Rosemary beetle can cause a small amount of damage to the leaves of host plants (MacLeod 2002).…”

“…Adults and larvae of the Rosemary beetle can cause a small amount of damage to the leaves of host plants (MacLeod 2002). In cases where the beetle is abundant in commercial plantations of these plants, it can cause negative economic consequences as it damages usable leaves, thereby reducing the harvested yields (Bieńkowski and Orlova-Bienkowskaja 2018).…”
