Alice & Eve: a celebration of women in computing

Abstract

Where are the women in computer science? Sure, everyone trots out first programmer Ada Lovelace, the human computers for the Manhattan Project and Bletchley Park, and of course Rear Admiral Grace Hopper, who invented the compiler and COBOL, a pioneering language that's still in use today. But what do we know about other women in the field? Why are there so few, why is that a bad thing, and what can we do about it? This booklet tries to help you find your own answers, by illustrating the lives and careers of some women who fought prejudice and bias to make names for themselves.
