Variable speed limit (VSL) is an intelligent transportation system (ITS) solution for traffic management. The speed limits can be changed dynamically to adapt to traffic conditions such as visibility and traffic volume, curvature, and grip coefficient of the road surface. The VSL traffic sign location problem and attempts to solve it using computer simulation are presented in this paper. Experiments on a selected road segment, carried out using the traffic simulator, have shown that the proposed method allows the driver's habits to be taken into account so that the location of road signs can be optimized. The observable effect was a reduction in vehicle speeds and speed variance on critical road segments, translating directly into increased safety and harmonized traffic.INDEX TERMS Optimal traffic control, variable speed limits (VSL), vehicle speed variance.

Microscopic traffic simulations have become increasingly important for research targeting connected vehicles. They are especially appreciated for enabling investigations targeting large areas, which would be practically impossible or too expensive in the real world. However, such large-scale simulation scenarios often lack validation with real-world measurements since these data are often not available. To overcome this issue, this work integrates probe counts from floating car data as reference counts to model a large-scale microscopic traffic scenario with high-resolution detector data. To integrate the frequent probe counts, a road network matching is required. Thus, a novel road network matching method based on a decision tree classifier is proposed. The classifier automatically adjusts its cosine similarity and Hausdorff distance-based similarity metrics to match the network’s requirements. The approach performs well with an F1-score of 95.6%. However, post-processing steps are required to produce a sufficiently consistent detector dataset for the subsequent traffic simulation. The finally modeled traffic shows a good agreement of 95.1%. with upscaled probe counts and no unrealistic traffic jams, teleports, or collisions in the simulation. We conclude that probe counts can lead to consistent traffic simulations and, especially with increasing and consistent penetration rates in the future, help to accurately model large-scale microscopic traffic simulations.

Intelligent Driver Model-Based Vehicular Ad Hoc Network Communication in Real-Time Using 5G New Radio Wireless Networks

Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) are self-organizing, open-structure inter-vehicle communication networks, along with wireless communication technology and transportation. Vehicle communication aims to improve the driver's response-ability and ensure traffic safety when encountering traffic accidents. The 5G NR on V2V communication, compared to fourth-generation (4G) long-term evolution (LTE), is more sophisticated and has ultra-high reliability. This research proposes intelligent driver model-lane changes (IDM-LC) and driver model-avoidance (IDM-A) models, which enhance the performance accuracy of the V2V communication through the 5G NR system. In this case, the authenticity of the vehicle movement models is tested on different road scenarios, i.e., square, hexagon, heptagon and triangle. In these scenarios, the vehicles' movements over the 5G networks receive widespread coverage whenever the vehicles receive signals from the roadside unit (RSU). Hence, the flexibility of VANET is used to improve the device-to-device (D2D) or vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication efficiency in the fifth-generation (5G) new radio (NR) system. In addition, the VANET simulation platform, i.e., simulation of urban mobility (SUMO) and network simulator-3 (NS-3), simulate and evaluate the comparison of V2V through the 5G networks, which receives widespread coverage in 15 to 20 m/s.
