Algorithm and Technique on Various Edge Detection : A Survey

Abstract: An edge may be defined as a set of connected pixels that forms a boundary between two disjoints regions.Edge detection is basically, a method of segmenting an image into regions of discontinuity. Edge detectionplays an important role in digital image processing and practical aspects of our life. .In this paper westudied various edge detection techniques as Prewitt, Robert, Sobel, Marr Hildrith and Canny operators. On comparing them we can see that canny edge detector performs better than all other edge detector… Show more

“…Thresholding becomes a simple but effective tool to separate objects from the background [8]. The way to extract the object from the background is to select a threshold T. Then, any point (x,y) in the image at which f (x,y) >T is called an object point; otherwise the point is called a background.…”

“…Each of the masks has the effect of calculating the gradient in both vertical and horizontal direction. These Sobel masks are convolved with smoothed image and giving gradients in i and j directions is given by [6]: Equation (1) shows convolution of input image with horizontal mask and Equation (2) shows convolution of image with vertical mask [8]. Gx=…”

“…It is needed in many applications for delineating the specific objects, such as in biomedical images, human-computer interaction, surveillance & monitoring and content based information retrieval. There are various edge detection techniques [2], which have been used by different researchers for finding the edges in the image. The most widely used techniques are Sobel, Prewitt, Roberts, Log and Canny, while each of them suffers from some shortcomings and produces errors in the advent of locating edges.…”
