Alginate and Carrageenan Immobilization Effects on Schizosaccharomyces Pombe Activity and Stability

Abstract: Calcium alginate and kappa-carrageenan were evaluated as entrapment matrices for whole cells of Schizosucchnromyces pombe. The fermentation activity of immobilized cells was enhanced by pre-incubation in nutrient medium. Alginate bead activity was significantly better than that with carrageenen beads (~~0.05). In grape must carrageenan beads disintegrated 10 times faster than alginate beads.

“…5 and Table 2). Two previous studies reported that carrageenan entrapped cells do not perform as well as alginate entrapped cells [27,37]. Low durability and high biodegradability are the main disadvantages of carrageenan as a support material for cell immobilization for wastewater treatment applications [28].…”

“…Alginate beads exhibit less durability than PVA beads and stabilization may be necessary to maintain its long-term operational efficiency [1,25,26]. Carrageenan beads have much lower mechanical stability than alginate beads and dissolve within 3-4 days in municipal wastewater [27,28]. In a separate study, long-term experiments (1 month) were conducted.…”
