“…Physical and mechanical methods include manual clearing of algal biomass, ball clay flocculating (Sun et al 1999), and changing light intensities (Han and Kim 2001;Pan et al 2003;Shen et al 2004). Chemical methods include algal biomass-clearing biocides (Cao et al 2008;Baek et al 2013Baek et al , 2014, and biotechnologies include growing (or planting) other safe macroalgae or microorganisms (Garry et al 1998;Kim et al 2008;Tilney et al 2014), bio-controlling reagents, plant repression, and fish feeding (Codd 2000;Xie 2003). Although some approaches work effectively in the short term, they may have potentially long-term negative consequences to the environment (Jeong et al 2000;Gumbo et al 2008).…”

“…When we consider the current version of the newly introduced TD49‐HcRNAV34 VLP for the control of HABs, its ecological effects become a concern. Recent microcosm and mesocosm studies indicated that thiazolidinedione derivatives, including TD49, successfully inhibited the growth of the harmful algal species that were tested (Baek et al ., 2012; 2013). The zooplankton community also was not impacted by low concentrations of TD49 (< 1.0 μM).…”

“…There were six mesocosms, with two mesocosms per group. Due to the large size and handling limitations (non-uniformity within repetitions) of mesocosm experiments, numerous researchers have conducted experiments utilizing gradient conditions rather than three repetitions, and the validity of their results has been demonstrated in many publications (Schä et al, 2001;Sandaa et al, 2009;Zöllner et al, 2009;Baek et al, 2013;Park et al, 2014;Lee et al, 2023). Considering this, the duplicated gradient experiments were performed in this study.…”
