While harmful algal blooms (HABs) have become a threat to fisheries, environmental and public health, and economies worldwide, most of the approaches under investigations for prevention, control, and mitigation (PCM) of HABs are limited by high cost and possible secondary pollution. This study reports our laboratory and field experiments demonstrating effective growth-inhibiting effects of the widely cultivated seaweed Gracilaria lemaneiformis on phytoplankton possibly forming HABs. Laboratory experiments demonstrated significant growth-inhibiting effects of fresh G. lemaneiformis thalli in a dose-response manner on four of six test microalgae commonly observed in the seaweed cultivation area (Scrippsiella trochoidea, Prorocentrum micans, Skeletonema costatum, Dunaliella salina) and on the natural phytoplankton assemblage in seawater. Significant inhibiting effects were also observed from in situ bottle (1.0 L) and mesocosm (50 and 1000 L) experiments on the harmful alga Phaeocystis globosa during its blooms. Based on a large-scale field survey, the phytoplankton abundance in the areas with Gracilaria cultivation was demonstrated to be significantly lower than that in the areas without Gracilaria. Collectively, our results showed that large-scale cultivation of G. lemaneiformis is an effective approach to prevent HABs in coastal waters, as an added value to the economically viable industry of Gracilaria cultivation.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) can lead to substantial socio-economic losses and extensive damage to aquatic ecosystems, drinking water sources and human health. Common algicidal techniques, including ozonation, ultrasonic treatment and dispersion of algae-killing chemicals, are unsatisfactory both economically and ecologically. This study therefore presents a novel alternative strategy for the efficient control of deleterious algae via the use of host-specific virus-like particles (VLPs) combined with chemically synthesized algicidal compounds. The capsid protein of HcRNAV34, a single-stranded RNA virus that infects the toxic dinoflagellate, Heterocapsa circularisquama, was expressed in and purified from Escherichia coli and then self-assembled into VLPs in vitro. Next, the algicidal compound, thiazolidinedione 49 (TD49), was encapsidated into HcRNAV34 VLPs for specific delivery to H. circularisquama. Consequently, HcRNAV34 VLPs demonstrated the same host selectivity as naturally occurring HcRNAV34 virions, while TD49-encapsidated VLPs showed a more potent target-specific algicidal effect than TD49 alone. These results indicate that target-specific VLPs for the delivery of cytotoxic compounds to nuisance algae might provide a safe, environmentally friendly approach for the management of HABs in aquatic ecosystems.

We integrated data from field observations during April and March with data from a 2-week mesocosm experiment to investigate changes in phytoplankton populations in southern Korean coastal waters (KCWs) following nutrient enrichment during early spring of 2021. The mesocosm experiments used 1000 L cylindrical plastic containers that had natural seawater (control), a low nutrient (LN) treatment, or a high nutrient (HN) treatment. The field observations showed that increased freshwater runoff following spring rainfall led to elevated levels of dissolved inorganic nitrogen and silicate and a significant increase in total phytoplankton abundance. In March, nutrient enrichment from water mixing and terrestrial runoff led to dominance of cryptophyte Cryptomonas spp. In April, higher nutrient levels than March (p< 0.05) resulting from increased terrestrial runoff after rainfall and dominant species were Skeletonema spp., and Cryptomonas spp. In the mesocosm experiment, a succession from E. zodiacus initially to Chaetoceros spp. in the middle stage, and then to Cylindrotheca closterium and Pseudo-nitzschia spp. finally was observed, depending on the species-specific nutrient availability after nutrient addition. In principal component analysis, the negative correlation between C. closterium and nutrient levels supports their nutrient availability, which is an adaptation to low-nutrient conditions. The combined data from the field observations and mesocosm experiments indicated that nutrient supplementation from terrestrial runoff and tidal mixing played a crucial role in determining the dynamics of phytoplankton populations during early spring in the KCWs.
