Algae of biological soil crusts from sand dunes of the Danube Delta biosphere reserve (Odesa Region, Ukraine)

Abstract: The species composition of algae from biological soil crusts (biocrusts) on the surface of sand dunes (Black Sea coast, Primorske, Izmail District, Odesa Region, Ukraine) was investigated. Samples were collected from three coastal localities: Katranivska Spit, Zhebryianska Bay and Zhebryianska Ridge. The latter two localities are in the territory of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve. The samples were investigated by direct microscopy, followed by a culture approach. 60 species from Chlorophyta (32), Cyanobact… Show more

“…Almost seven different areas were studied to make a comparison on fungal community. The study also focuses on the effect of microbial growth in the soil that results in the changes of soil texture, soil profile, soil humidity, depth of sandy gravel components, ground water level, plant community as well as the other organic composition of the soil [80][81][82][83][84][85][86][87][88].…”

“…The strains of Coelastrella terrestris were isolated in the foreland of Sölheimjökull glacier from a small brook “where macroscopic mucilaginous mats of reddish cyanobacteria dominated” (Iceland) [ 167 ], from soil in Czechia [ 171 ], from alpine soil near the village Obergurgl, Tyrol (Austria) [ 172 ], and from soils in Pirin Mountains (Bulgaria). It was found in the soil crusts from sand dunes of the Danube Delta, Odesa Oblast (Ukraine) [ 173 ] ( Table 2 ).…”

“…Much less species number was detected in biocrusts of the present study mostly concerned with identi cation of the most frequent and dominating species. While complete species composition of algae and cyanobacteria of biocrusts was showed in Schulz et al 2015 and related papers (Mikhailyuk et al 2019(Mikhailyuk et al , 2021. It was determined using different methods and so-called integrative approach: direct microscopy, enrichment and pure cultures, molecular identi cation of some species etc.).…”
