Alfvén wave propagation and ion cyclotron interactions in the expanding solar wind: One‐dimensional hybrid simulations

Abstract: Abstract. We carry out one-dimensional hybrid simulations of Alfv•n waves propagating along the magnetic field in the presence of a mean radial spherically expanding plasma outflow, representing fast solar wind streams. The equations for particle ions of multiple species and fluid electrons are solved using the Expanding Box Model, a locally Cartesian representation of motion in spherical coordinates, in a frame moving with the local average wind speed. The model gives a minimally consistent description of the… Show more

“…These models have been used successfully to study the nonlinear interactions between a spectrum of waves, beams, and ions in solar wind plasma and the resulting anisotropic heating (Gary et al, , 2003Ofman et al, 2001Ofman et al, , 2002Ofman et al, , 2005Xie et al, 2004;Ofman and Viñas, 2007;Ofman, 2010a). The effects of solar wind expansion of the evolution of the wave-particles interactions and on the heating was also studied (Liewer et al, 2001;Hellinger et al, 2003Hellinger et al, , 2005Hellinger and Trávníček, 2008).…”

“…The expansion model used was initially proposed for MHD equations by Grappin & Velli (1996) and was later implemented to hybrid 1D and 2D models (Liewer et al 2001;Hellinger et al 2003). Our version of the model has been implemented in previous studies of solar wind expansion in 1D hybrid modeling with two ion species (Ofman et al 2011;Maneva et al 2013) and in a 2D hybrid model of homogenous H + -He ++ solar wind plasma Maneva et al 2014).…”

“…Wave-particle interactions have been considered as a possible solar wind heating mechanism, and their effects have been studied by a number of authors (e.g. Hollweg & Turner 1978;Dusenbery & Hollweg 1981;Marsch et al 1982c;Isenberg 1984;Leer et al 1992;Hu et al 1997;Czechowski et al 1998;Cranmer et al 1999b;Hu & Habbal 1999;Li et al 1999;Tam & Chang 1999a;Isenberg et al 2000;Cranmer 2001;Gary et al 2001;Liewer et al 2001;Tam & Chang 2001;Tu & Marsch 2001;Vocks & Marsch 2001). Experimentally, there has been increasing evidence suggesting that wave-particle interactions play a significant role in the evolution and acceleration of the solar wind.…”
