Aldose‐Reductase‐ and Protein‐Glycation‐Inhibitory Principles from the Whole Plant of Duchesnea chrysantha

Abstract: Ellagic acid (1), 3,3'-di-O-methylellagic acid (2), 3,3',4-tri-O-methylellagic acid (3), isovitexin (4), kaempferol 3-O-beta-D-glucuronide methyl ester (5), quercetin 3-O-alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl-(1-->6)-beta-D-galactopyranoside (6), ursolic acid, pomolic acid, tormentic acid, euscaphic acid, euscaphic acid 28-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside, and maslinic acid were isolated from the AcOEt- and BuOH-soluble MeOH extract of Duchesnea chrysantha (whole plant). The isolates were subjected to in vitro bioassays to evaluat… Show more

“…Previous study has demonstrated the antidiabetic activity of 5 in vivo (Malini et al, 2011[ 12 ]). Moreover, 5 has been widely reported as an inhibitor of aldose reductase enzyme and inhibitor of the formation of advanced glycation end products (Kim et al, 2008[ 10 ]). Aldose reductase inhibitors are an attractive pharmacological target for the treatment of diabetic complications.…”

“…It is now established that ellagic acids and associated fl avonoids possess moderate inhibitory effects on rat lens AR. Compounds such as isovitexin, kaempferol 3-O -beta-d -glucuronide methyl ester, and quercetin 3-O -alphal -arabinopyranosyl-(1-->6)-beta-d -galactopyranoside have also shown excellent inhibitory activities toward the formation of AGEs (Kim et al 2008 ).…”

“…The inhibitory properties of pomegranate fruit on protein glycation were first observed using a watersoluble extract of pomegranate rind [36]. The importance of the role of ellagic acid in inhibiting protein glycation was revealed in two separate studies [37,38]. Several ellagitannins isolated from pomegranates were all shown to be more potent inhibitors of AGE formation than aminoguanidine [39].…”
