Alcohol Use Disorder and Comorbid Depression: A Randomized Controlled Trial Investigating the Effectiveness of Supportive Text Messages in Aiding Recovery

Abstract: This randomized controlled trial examined the impact of daily supportive text messages over a six-month treatment period on mood and alcohol consumption in individuals with a dual diagnosis of alcohol use disorder (AUD) and depression. Results highlighted mood benefits at 3-month and lower alcohol consumption at 6-month treatment points.

“…Our research contributes to a larger program of research that is deliberately responding to the ongoing call for transformation of mental health care service to meet the needs of populations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our study also aligns with our research program advocacy for mobilizing supportive text message technology (24)(25)(26)(27)(28)(29)(30)(31)(32) to reach populations disparately affected by mental health concerns.…”

“…The trend for mean scores across the stress, depression, and anxiety scales to decrease in severity from younger to older age has potential implications for planning to meet mental health service needs during COVID-19. Innovative and cost-effective interventions such as supportive text messaging which are independent of geographic location, are free to the end user, do not require expensive data plans, and can reach thousands of people simultaneously [ 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 , 30 , 31 ] could be useful particularly to a younger age population who seem to be most impacted psychologically during the COVID-19 pandemic.…”

“…As our findings correspond to some prevalence rates observed in recent studies from different geographic jurisdictions [ 23 , 24 ], as described above, conclusions drawn from our data regarding the prevalence of OCD symptoms, likely GAD and likely MDD correlates are likely fairly representative of the general Canadian population. Innovative and cost-effective interventions with the capability to be deployed quickly at the population level, such as supportive text messaging which is free to the end user, does not require expensive data plans, can reach thousands of people simultaneously, is independent of geographic location [ 21 , 37 , 38 , 39 , 40 , 41 , 42 , 43 ], and could be particularly useful for those experiencing OCD symptoms and those who are at a higher risk of experiencing stress, anxiety and depression during the COVID-19 pandemic.…”
