Alcohol Use and Crime

Abstract: There is an association between alcohol and crime, and the strength of this association is borne out by the estimated number of arrests involving alcohol. In the United Kingdom, for example, an Institute of Alcohol Studies report in 2010 noted that alcohol was a factor in approximately 50% of crimes. While figures are smaller in the United States, a recent US Department of Justice survey of inmates in 2010 suggested that alcohol is linked to approximately one‐third of crimes.
