“…Most young university students say they consume alcohol during their leisure time and consider it a social disinhibitor [ 30 ]. In the university setting, the pattern of consumption is strongly linked to the phenomenon of the “botellón” (street drinking), characterized by intensive “bingeing” during the weekends [ 31 ], which is also shown in the results of our study. In the results of the AUDIT questionnaire, we observed that a high proportion of students (36.7%) presented a positive result through the cut-off points used; however, the proportion of hazardous drinkers according to the ISCA questionnaire was (10.2%), resulting in a clearly lower rate in addition to observing a statistically significant difference between women and men when considering the limits of specific risks.…”

“…Fourthly, there was an imbalance between sexes, which could reduce the representativeness of the sample. However, it is important to note that the majority of Spanish university students in health sciences are women [ 4 , 75 ]. Finally, the MEDAS questionnaire may be more appropriately used to measure adherence to the Mediterranean diet in adults, because young students normally do not drink wine.…”

“…Regarding alcohol consumption, young adults generally drink to excess as a way to reduce stress and deal with social anxiety [38]. Studies of alcohol consumption among university students show that over 50% of students report consuming alcohol on weekends and that the pattern of consumption known as "binge drinking", the episodic intake of large quantities of alcohol in a short period of time, is an increasing public health issue with predicable consequences [39,40]. The patterns of consumption appear to differ according to sex; as opposed to men, emotional distress and depression among women has an inverse correlation to alcohol consumption [41].…”
