Alcohol Consumption and Pancreatitis Mortality

Abstract: Background: Pancreatitis is a major public health problem with high associated economic costs. Accumulated research and empirical evidence suggests that excessive alcohol consumption is a major risk factor for both acute and chronic pancreatitis. In line with this evidence we assume that devastating combination of higher level of alcohol consumption per capita and drinking of vodka results in a close association between binge drinking and pancreatitis mortality at the aggregate level in Russia. “…The conclusion of the study 2 that a high level of alcohol consumption and binge drinking are contributors to the pancreatitis mortality rate is in accordance with the generally accepted knowledge 4 ; but significant items are not discussed in 2 . “…The exaggeration tends to disguise shortcomings of the health care, whereas responsibility for the relatively low life expectancy 1 is shifted onto the patients, who supposedly choose to drink excessively, to consume poor quality or non-beverage alcohol, and prefer the heavy binge drinking pattern associated with social and health-related risks. Such exaggeration can be illustrated with the example of studies on acute pancreatitis and alcohol consumption 2,3 .…”

“…The pancreatitis mortality rate increased during the period 1992-1994 by 72.3% and 29.6% for men and women, respectively. After a slight decrease during 1995-1998, the pancreatitis mortality rate "jumped dramatically" between 1998 and 2005 (by 84.3% and 46.4% in men and women) 40 , outstripping the increase in alcohol consumption for the corresponding periods 40,41 (which was masked by the scale of the graphs in 40 ). Epidemiologic data indicate a higher frequency of alcohol-induced acute pancreatitis in the areas where surrogates or homemade alcohol are easily available 42 .…”

“…The decrease in mortality since 2006 may have been caused by improvements in the health care (which should not give rise to excessive optimism in view of persisting shortages), quality improvement of alcoholic beverages, the general tendency of alcohol consumption decrease 57 , particularly, decline of the heavy binge drinking of vodka 58 , partly replaced by moderate consumption of beer 40 . Reliability of official statistics is also not a matter of course 26 .…”
