Alcohol- and Light-induced Electro-oculographic Responses in Age-related Macular Degeneration & Central Serous Chorioretinopathy

Abstract: The non-photic electro-oculographic (EOG) response induced by alcohol has been proposed as an indicator of retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) integrity, and reported to be abnormal in age-related macular degeneration (ARMD). To evaluate this proposal, we have measured the alcohol-EOG as well as the ISCEV-standard EOG in patients with ARMD (n=11 patients, 4 eyes with drusen, 8 eyes with 'dry' and 7 eyes with 'wet' lesions) and central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC, n=11 patients, 7 eyes with active and 6 eyes wit… Show more

“…Even if a 95%; criterion is used, the lower value (one might guess from our limited sample that it would be below 1.2) will be so close to 1.0 that in practical clinical terms it will be difficult to differentiate a subnormal value from a low to normal response. Nevertheless, the Alc-EOG may still have value, in following a disease process or for comparing mean or median response amplitudes between groups of normal and diseased subjects, as we demonstrate in a companion paper with respect to ARMD and CSC [24].…”

“…Elle reste cantonnée au cadre expérimental [Gallemore et al, 1998], [Wu, Marmor, 2005]. L'enregistrement se fait comme pour un EOG, en effectuant des mouvements oculaires réguliers, le sujet restant dans l'obscurité.…”
