Alcohol and delirium tremens: effects of average number of drinks per day and beverage type

Abstract: ObjectiveAssociations of amount of alcohol intake and beverage type with the risk of delirium tremens (DT) have not been studied. This longitudinal study investigated if the average number of drinks per day and beverage type predict DT.MethodsA cohort of 3 582 alcohol‐dependent men and women aged 19–82 without previous DT were interviewed about alcohol intake and beverage type at baseline in 1994–2005 and followed through record linkage in Danish nationwide registers to identify incident DT. Data were analyzed… Show more

“…In other bivariate analyses both parental drinking and how much alcohol the person could take (SRE) were also related to DT, indicating that patients with more severe AUD were most at risk of DT. 7 In the present study patients with DT experience reported 12–16 units of alcohol being required to produce an effect, which is lower than the 20 units reported among DT in a Danish study, 32 possibly related to higher population-level of alcohol consumption in Denmark than in Norway.…”

“…This is in line with previous studies showing that males are more at risk for DT, maybe due to more intense drinking. 32 Other studies correcting for level of drinking fail to find a sex effect. 7 Also in the present study, low educational level and male sex may be less important than other clinical features as these background variables were related to duration of problematic drinking and self-reported effects of alcohol.…”

“…Long-term drinking with addiction causes severe mental health problems such as "Korsakoff Syndrome" (Ritz et al, 2021) and "Delirium Tremens" (Calvo et al, 2018). Especially "delirium tremens", also known as alcohol withdrawal syndrome, occurs after the individual suddenly reduces or quits alcohol, so alcohol addiction becomes more lethal (Sørensen et al, 2019). The author explains below, using a funny memory, that his father diagnosed this in one of his patients as follows:…”
