Dietary habits, including alcohol consumption, are among the significant risk factors for the occurrence of atrial fibrillation (AF). The pathophysiological relationship between alcohol consumption and AF is complex and multifactorial. However, there is conflicting information about the impact of alcohol consumption (in various doses and types) on the risk of AF and AF-related outcomes. Alcohol consumption is significantly associated with AF in a gender-independent manner. The widespread belief that moderate amounts of alcohol, especially red wine, have cardioprotective effects may mean that more people will use alcohol. Even small amounts of alcohol regularly consumed increase the risk of AF. In this narrative review, we will review the epidemiological associations between alcohol and AF, and the implications for incident AF and AF-related outcomes.

Indian scientists began to work on the theoretical aspects of LHC physics from the early 1980s, at the same time when the rest of the world started taking interest in this then-futuristic topic. From this point grew a whole school of collider phenomenologists, who now form a significant fraction of the Indian high-energy physics community. This article briefly reviews the growth and contributions of the Indian school, on the way describing some of the physics ideas while placing the work in the international context, and proceeding thus, brings the story up to date in mid-2022.Dedicated to the memory of the late D.P. Roy (1941Roy ( -2017, the father of Indian collider theory. The expectant 80sThe LHC owes its origin [1] to CERN's far-sighted leaders, Léon van Hove, who served from 1976-1980 as the Scientific Director-General, and Technical Director-General Sir John Adams (1976)(1977)(1978)(1979)(1980)(1981), who resolved that it would be feasible and scientifically rewarding to build the next-generation storage ring at CERN. Thus, in 1977, Adams wrote the crucial concept note that the LEP collider 1 tunnel, which would be excavated in the 1980s, should be made large enough to accommodate the superconducting magnets required for a future phase of proton acceleration at higher energies. This 1977 note may be thought of as the genesis of the LHC. By 1978, it was already well known in the community, even though the formal approval for the LEP came only in 1981, and the machine itself started running in 1989 [2]. However, the fact that the 20 TeV LHC would eventually come and that the physics at such a machine should be studied, was in the air right from the early 1980s onward. Moreover, the USA was supposed to build a 40 TeV Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) which, sadly, never materialised 2 . The 1980s were, in fact, a period of great optimism for high-energy physics -or, as it was then more commonly known, elementary particle physics. One trigger for this may have lain in the decision of the Nobel Prize committee, in 1979, to recognise the work of Glashow (1961) [3], of Salam (1966-1968 1 The Large Electron-Positron collider.2 It was sanctioned in 1989, and eventually cancelled in 1993.

BackgroundThe association of alcohol intake with incident atrial fibrillation (AF) remains controversial, particularly among older individuals at higher risk of AF. This study explores the association of alcohol intake with incident AF in persons ≥65 years old in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) cohort.MethodsData were obtained from ARIC, a community-based cohort aiming to identify risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Alcohol intake was assessed through interviewer-administered questionnaires. Incident AF was ascertained between the 2011-2013 visit and 2019. Participants were classified as current, former, or never drinkers. Former drinkers were further categorized on weekly alcohol consumption: light, moderate, heavy. Covariates included demographic characteristics, prevalent cardiovascular disease, and other risk factors. The association between drinking characteristics and incident AF was analyzed using Cox proportional hazard models.ResultsThere were 5,131 participants with mean (SD) age 75.2 (5.0) years, 41% male, 23% Black, and 739 (14%) cases of incident AF. Current (HR 1.04, 95% CI 0.83-1.29) and former (HR 1.16, 95% CI 0.93-1.45) drinkers had a similar risk of incident AF compared to never drinkers. Incident AF was similar across categories of alcohol consumption in former drinkers (heavy drinkers [HR 1.14, 95% CI 0.84-1.55], moderate drinkers [HR 1.15, 95% CI 0.75-1.78) compared to light drinkers). Risk of AF did not differ per 5-year increase in years of abstinence (HR 1.00, 95% CI 0.96-1.03). There was an increase in the risk per 5-year increase in years of drinking (HR 1.07, 95% CI 0.96-1.19).ConclusionWe did not find consistent evidence supporting an increased risk of AF associated with alcohol intake in persons aged 65 and older, highlighting the need to further explore this relationship in older populations.
