Alcohol Abuse

Abstract: We reviewed 38 controlled studies of marital and family therapy (MFT) in alcoholism treatment. We conclude that, when the alcoholic is unwilling to seek help, MFT is effective in helping the family cope better and motivating alcoholics to enter treatment. Specifically, (a) Al-Anon facilitation and referral help family members cope better; (b) Community Reinforcement and Family Training promotes treatment entry; and (c) the popular Johnson intervention apparently does not effectively promote treatment entry. “…According to Marlowe et al (1996), substance abusers reported that family members exerted substantially more influence over their decision to enter treatment than other sources of influence, including legal pressures exerted by court-mandated treatment. Research has also shown that family members and significant others can be important resources in treating drug abuse (Azrin, 1976;Garrett et al, 1997;McGillicuddy, Rychtarik, Duquette, & Morsheimer, 2001;O'Farrell & Fals-Stewart, 2003;Sisson & Azrin, 1986;Szapocznik, Kurtines, Foote, Perez-Vidal, & Hervis, 1983;Thomas & Santa, 1982). Yet, little research has systematically examined interventions for family members who could facilitate the entry of drug-abusing youth in treatment.…”

“…This conclusion is based on equivalent or greater improvement in COs' functioning following Al-Anon facilitation or referral than that of waitlist control groups or family-involved treatments. However, no new studies of Al-Anon facilitation and referral have been conducted since 2003 (O'Farrell andClements, 2012). In addition, no previous study has compared the health and coping of Al-Anon newcomers and members, as we did.…”

“…As reviewed by O'Farrell and Fals-Stewart (2003), when drinkers are unwilling to seek help, Al-Anon facilitation (structured encouragement of participation) and referral help family members cope better. This conclusion is based on equivalent or greater improvement in COs' functioning following Al-Anon facilitation or referral than that of waitlist control groups or family-involved treatments.…”

“…Aufgrund der starken Zunahme des Heroinkonsums in den 80er Jahren (Grob, 2012) entwickelte sich aus der Angehörigen-Selbsthilfe in Zürich eine professionelle Beratungsstelle, die sich ausschliesslich auf die Unterstützung von Angehörigen spezialisiert hat (Suhner & Beck, 2012 (Fernandez et al, 2006;O'Farrell & Fals-Stewart, 2003). In der Schweiz sind sie seit über 40 Jahren tätig.…”
