Albumin Immunological Relationships of Australian Marsupials. 2. The Pseudocheiridae

Abstract: Microcomplement fixation of albumin was used to examine the phylogenetic relationships among the ringtail possums, family Pseudocheiridae. Phylogenetic analysis of the data supports the hypothesis of at least three distinct clades within the family: one containing Petauroides and Hemibelideus; a second consisting of Pseudocheirus herbertensis, Ps. forbesi, Ps. mayeri, and Ps. canescens; and a third containing Ps. archeri, Ps. corinnae, Ps. cupreus and Ps. dahli. The data have not resolved the phylogenetic posi… Show more

“…Monophyly of Pseudocheiridae as represented by Petauroides and Pseudocheirus was strongly supported by ND2 in accordance with microcomplement fixation (Baverstock et al, 1990b) and DNA-DNA hybridization (Westerman et al, 1990) studies. A close association between Dactylopsila and Dactylonax was also confirmed, although the levels of divergence between them indicates that they are quite distinct genera (see also Edwards and Westerman, 1992).…”

“…The most comprehensive phylogenetic studies of Pseudocheiridae are based on microcomplement fixation studies with albumin (Baverstock et al 1990b ), single-copy DNA-DNA hybridization data (Springer et al 1992 ), craniodental characters (Springer 1993 ), and concatenated nuclear gene sequences (Meredith et al 2009a ). Baverstock et al ( 1990b ) treated all pseudocheirid species except for Petauroides volans as members of the genus Pseudocheirus , but their taxonomic sampling included representatives of all pseudocheirid genera as currently recognized by Groves ( 2005 ). Baverstock et al’s ( 1990b ) microcomplement fixation analyses provided support for three primary lineages: Pseudochirulus + Pseudocheirus , Hemibelideus + Petauroides , and Pseudochirops + Petropseudes (Baverstock et al 1990b ).…”

“…However, prior to the elevation of pseudocheirids to family status (Aplin and Archer 1987), most species were uniformly placed in the umbrella genus Pseudocheirus with the exception of Petauroides volans Kerr, 1792 due to its gliding locomotion. Molecular phylogenetic research on pseudocheirids in the 1980s confirmed the morphology‐based subgeneric and monophyletic groupings of Pseudocheirus and revealed the diverse nature of the family (Baverstock 1984; Baverstock et al . 1987, 1990; Springer et al .…”
