ALBI and PALBI grade predict survival for HCC across treatment modalities and BCLC stages in the MELD Era

Abstract: Both ALBI and PALBI grade are adequate models to assess liver dysfunction in HCC. The PALBI grade is consistently better in all patients, in patients with minimally decreased liver function, and in patients receiving different aggressive therapies.

“…Additionally, albumin, as part of the ALBI grading system, has been shown to be a quantitative, useful and prognostic indicator of liver dysfunction in HCC patients (21)(22)(23)(24)(25). Albumin has previously been reported to have direct HCC growth inhibitory properties in vitro (26,27), and there is also suggestive clinical evidence for an inhibitory effect on HCC in patients (30)(31)(32).…”

“…HCC was diagnosed by 4-phase multi-detector computed tomography (CT) scan, dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) [32,33]. Diagnosis of HCC was confirmed if there is one of the following three items: a) One or more of liver nodules > 1 cm in diameter in CT or MRI.…”

“…Liu et al [2] reported that the accuracy of PALBI grade was superior to that of ALBI. It is well known that the prognosis of a patient with HCC depends both on hepatic functional reserve and tumor factors.…”
