In Lake Zirich, a deep subalpine mesotrophic lake, phosphate was low or limiting at 0.2 to 1 FM relative to combined nitrogen at 50 ~_LM. Heterotrophic bacteria were responsible for 53% of the observed microbial wet biomass in our depth profile while phytoplankton, largely PZanktoGzrti (Uscillutoriu~ rubescens, contributed most of the remainder. Most cell carbon was contributed by this carbon-sufficient cyanobacterium. A material balance indicated that most of the phosphate was sequestered by the bacteria due to a higher phosphate content and specific affinity for this nutrient. Size distributions of the heterotrophic bacteria were narrow; 90% of organisms were from 0.06 to 0.66 km3 in volume. Several subpopulations of bacteria were resolved by flow cytometry, and bivariate fluorescence (DAPI-DNA) and light scatter (cell-size) histogram profiles varied with depth. One or two of these subpopulations appeared to be bacteria with sufficient cytoplasmic constituents to produce a normal light-scatter signal but retained only a small amount of DNA; an apparent content of 200 kbp or 5% of a usual oligobacterial genome. These helped increase the oligobacterial population to 6 X lo6 ml-'. Application of published specific affinities and measured nutrient concentrations to formulations of system kinetics led to the conclusion that growth rates of the heterotrophic bacterial fraction were carbon limited with cell size, and thus populations were controlled by grazing. The depth profile indicated that phototrophs affected phosphate concentrations in a significant way. Considerations of nutrient uptake kinetics suggested that much potential capacity remained in the dissolved phosphate pool to support additional phytoplanktonic biomass. Computations led to the conclusion that, if phosphate is generally limiting in lakes, then additional mechanisms exist which limit populations of phytoplankton to sufficiently small values to allow phosphate accumulation to observed levels. Bacterial biomass then depends on the organic carbon from these phosphate-controlled organisms.

After a historical introduction and some short remarks on criminal arson, this review of the literature since 1955 mainly focuses on pathological firesetting. It deals with all important aspects of the psychiatry of firesetting: arson by persons referred to psychiatric examination, by the mentally ill, and by psychiatric inpatients, the relationship between arson and sexuality, psychoanalytical contributions, arson by children and juveniles, therapy and prevention of firesetting behaviour. Female arsonists, recidivism, and suicide by burning are considered separately.

“…State‐level efforts to create STEM‐focused schools at scale have been concentrated at the high school level, with ongoing initiatives in Texas, Ohio, North Carolina, Arkansas, Tennessee, Arizona, and Washington State. Several school networks now include elementary STEM schools, including High Tech High (Rosenstock, ), Harmony Public Schools, and the New Tech High Foundation, yet these numbers remain modest in contrast to the high school scale up. When compared to inclusive STEM high schools (ISHSs), the establishing and scaling of STEM‐focused elementary schools are several years behind the high school work.…”

Increasingly, STEM focused high schools are used prepare students for college STEM majors and launch them into STEM careers. Yet a new focus on STEM education at the elementary levels suggests that the importance of STEM education is much broader than a preparation for workforce needs in high school or college. This paper describes a case study designed to articulate the mission and design of an effective and nationally recognized STEM‐focused elementary school. As described through the six most impactful components of STEM‐focused elementary school design at Walter Bracken STEAM Academy, the case study emphasizes the school's strong and inclusive school leadership, with staff organized into grade level groups empowered to innovate and honing their teaching practices. External partnerships are leveraged to broaden student learning opportunities. Students at Bracken engage in active learning opportunities and multidisciplinary lessons where STEM is used as a way of thinking and as a way to coherently combine content into active learning opportunities that are engaging for learners. By organizing the structural components of an exemplary STEM‐focused elementary school, we hope to deliver actionable reforms for elementary schools wanting to increase their STEM‐focused offerings.
