Dedicated to Professor Heinrich Vahrenkamp on the occasion of his 60th birthdaySolutions of metastable aluminum(i) halides [1] can be prepared by condensation of the high-temperature molecules AlX (X Cl, Br, I) with suitable donor-containing solvents. The thermodynamically favored disproportionation of these compounds to aluminum metal and the trihalide can be controlled kinetically by the choice of halide, donor, and temperature. Thus, with NEt 3 as donor a planar Al 4 species (for example, Al 4 Br 4´4 NEt 3[2] ) is obtained, whereas with THF the polyhedral subhalide Al 12 (AlBr 2´T HF) 10´2 THF forms as a result of ªinternalº disproportionation. [3] An additional variation of the disproportionation is acheived by replacement of the halide with suitable bulky substituents. Use of the N(SiMe 3 ) 2 group proved to be especially successful: Reaction of LiN(SiMe 3 ) 2 with a solution of AlI provided a Al 77 R 20 2À compound with the largest metalloid cluster yet characterized by diffraction methods. Geburtstag gewidmetDurch gemeinsame Kondensation von AlX-Hochtemperaturmolekülen (X Cl, Br, I) mit geeigneten donorhaltigen Lösungsmitteln lassen sich metastabile Aluminium(i)-halogenid-Lösungen [1] herstellen. Ihre thermodynamisch begünstigte Disproportionierung in metallisches Aluminium und das Trihalogenid kann durch die Wahl des Halogenids, des Donors und der Temperatur kinetisch gesteuert werden. So erhält man mit NEt 3 als Donor planare Al 4 -Spezies, z. B. Al 4 Br 4´4 NEt 3 , [2] während mit THF durch ¹innereª Disproportionierung das polyedrische Subhalogenid Al 12 (AlBr 2T HF) 10´2 THF [3] entsteht. Eine zusätzliche Variation bei der Disproportionierung wird durch die Substitution des Halogenids mit geeigneten sperrigen Resten bewirkt. Als besonders erfolgreich hat sich hierbei der N(SiMe 3 ) 2 -Substituent erwiesen. So gelang durch Umsetzung mit AlI-Lösung die Synthese einer Al 77 R 20 2À -Verbindung mit dem bislang gröûten durch Beugungsmethoden charakterisierten metalloiden Cluster. Dieser kann als Intermediat auf dem Weg zum Aluminiummetall angesehen werden. [4] Mit reaktiveren AlCl-Lösungen konnten jüngst bei gleichem Substituenten zwei weitere metalloide Cluster ± Al 7 R 6 À [5] und Al 12 R 8 À [6] ± als Zwischenstufen bei der Bildung der Al 77 -Einheit isoliert werden. Da in diesen Clustern (Al 7 , Al 12 , Al 77 ) die Zahl der direkten Metall-Metall-Kontakte diejenige der Metall-Ligand-Wechselwirkungen (2e2c) übersteigt, bezeichnen wir solche Spezies in Abgrenzung zu dem ursprünglich sehr weit gespannten Begriff der Metallcluster von Cotton [7] als metalloide Cluster. [5] Bei der Suche nach weiteren Zwischenstufen auf dem Weg zum Metall konnte nun erstmals mit der Titelverbindung [Al 14 {N(SiMe 3 ) 2 } 6 I 6 Li(OEt 2 ) 2 ] À [Li(OEt 2 ) 4 ] ´T ol 1 ein gemischt substituierter (I, N(SiMe 3 ) 2 ) metalloider Cluster isoliert und strukturell charakterisiert werden. Die Synthese von 1 gelang durch geringfügige Variation der Reaktionsbedingungen, unter denen sich der Al 77 -Cluster gebildet hatte. Eine vorbehandelte AlI´Et 2 O-Lösung wurde nach Zugabe von festem LiN(SiMe 3 ) 2 mehrmals auf 55 8C erwärmt und langsam abgekühlt. Nach einigen Wochen kristallisierte 1 bei 7 8C in Form dunkelrotbrauner Plättchen. Die erstmalige Bildung der gemischt substituierten Verbindung 1 erscheint plausibel, da nur reaktionsträgeres AlI in der hier beschriebenen Weise reagiert, während die Umsetzungen von reaktiverem AlCl mit dem gleichen Edukt LiN(SiMe 3 ) 2 unter vollständiger Substitution des Halogenids zum Al 7 R 6 À -sowie zum Al 12 R 8 À -Cluster führen. Möglicherweise ist eine Al 7 R 3 X 3 À -Spezies die gemeinsame Vorstufe, die im Falle von X Cl schnell substituiert wird. Für X I ist die Substitution so langsam, dass eine Dimerisierung zu 1 kinetisch bevorzugt abläuft. Abbildung 1 zeigt das Ergebnis der Röntgenstrukturanalyse [8] von 1.
