Al–Mg–Ca-Layered Double Oxides for Efficient Removal of As(V) from Water: The Role of Amides

Abstract: Al–Mg–Ca-layered double oxides (LDO) were synthesized by solvothermal process at 160 °C/24 h in the presence of formamide (F), dimethylformamide (DMF), and diethylformamide (DEF), followed by calcination at 500 °C. The role of different amides for the formation of Al–Mg–Ca LDOs in terms of their microstructural behaviors, textural properties, and surface elemental analysis toward the removal of As(V) from groundwater was investigated. Microstructural analysis shows chrysanthemum flower-like morphology (2–4 μm… Show more

“…This could be because there are target ions competing with the hydroxyl ions for the active sites. The decreasing trend of the adsorption percentage in a basic pH (10–13) range could be as electrostatic repulsion between anionic F – and OH – ions. In this study, the synthesized fluoride solution at 6.5 ± 0.2 pH was employed for the subsequent investigation of F – ion adsorption.…”

“…The absorption bands at 446 and 654 cm -1 correspond to the Al-O and Mg-O lattice vibrations whereas peak position at 1379 cm -1 is due to the presence of nitrate/carbonate anions in the composites. 27 The wide absorption band at 3446 cm -1 and the sharp band at 1629 cm -1 are the characteristics stretching and bending vibrations of O-H bond, respectively. relative pressure (p/po < 0.01) and at higher relative pressure (p/po< 0.8); the former is due to the presence of microporosity while the latter demonstrates interparticle mesoporosity in the samples.…”

“…The adsorbents are chosen based on their physico-chemical properties like porosity, surface area, favourable kinetic and transport properties, thermo-chemical stability, regenerative capacity and low cost. Ceramic based metal oxides (alumina, magnesia, calcia, iron oxide etc), 10 layered double hydroxides, [11][12][13][14] activated alumina, [15][16] alumina dispersed charcoal, 17 porous alumina 18 etc. are generally used for water defluoridation.…”
